I had the 3007 but ended up selling it ( to my regret ) so I'm back in the market.

Dell has a sale on both units in Canada, the 2711 for $899 and the 3007 for $999. I would like to buy the 3007 again but I'm not willing to buy another videocard in the process - so crossfire is a nono.

The question I have is if the ATI 5870 is capable of running smoothly on the 2711. If so then that will definitely be my choice. The $100 difference between the monitors is not much but adding another 5870 is ridiculous.

Does anyone know?

the 2711 have a new generation horizontal IPS panel (H-IPS), it is (theoretically) superior than the 3007 S-IPS. both are good choices (i personally prefer the 3007).

about the "capable of running smoothly " 5870 doubt, there is too many things involved in that so generic question.. just pick one of them, you will change your videocard someday anyway ;)

The U2711 is a bigger brother of the U2410, which is the one I have, they're almost identical in every aspects and the biggest difference between those 2 is the U2711 has 2560 x 1440 res while the U2410 supports 1920x1200. Compare to the 3007, I can see that the U2410 has a much better contrast, brightness and somewhat image quality overall. But I mainly game on my 3007WFP-HC and love it, gaming experience at 2560x1600 is definitely a step up compare to 1920x1200. Anyway speaking of the video card, since the U2711 use a resolution that just a little bit less than a 30" res., you need a beefy video card to handle. I would recommend either the GTX 480 or the HD5970 if you plan to get the U2711 or 3007, the extra RAM will help.

Thanks iTravis for the recommendation. I think I'm going to go the route of the 2711 since the 3007 looks too big for my desk area...I hope I don't regret it since it's only $100 difference.

yeah i hope too..

"Input lag was also mediocre, and lacking in any 'through mode' to reduce. This screen isn't really aimed at gamers of course.." http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2711.htm

like i said, both are good choices but in the gaming area the 3007 win.

have fun!

I'd totally go for 3007. It's an awesome screen.

i would like to add that the 2711 would be a killer if was better designed on the electronic components part because H-IPS "is" better then S-IPS but the panel type is only part of the equation to produce a good monitor.

in short:

3007- good panel + flawless electronics = :D

2711- better panel + flawed electronics = :)

I ordered the 2711 since the 3007 is just too big but now I'm concerned with your comment on flawed electronics; can you elaborate please?

Thanks.

You'll be happy with either choice, for me I would do gaming and anything that require more workspace on the 30", everything else on my U2410.

Between the 3007 and the 2709, which one do you prefer?

2709W is just simply a bigger 2407 IMO, besides the fact that it has deeper black thanks to the 3000:1 contrast ratio vs the 1000:1 on the 3007 and a bit higher response times (6 vs 8), there's little to none to compare to the 3007. More importantly, the 3007 uses IPS panel while the 2709W uses S-PVA, that's a huge advantage for the 3007, not to mention the resolution (2560x1600 vs 1920x1200). The only disadvantages of the 3007: it doesn't have a scaler, only 1 DVI, and no multiple inputs but if you just use it for 1 computer then those don't really matter. Guess the choice is pretty much clear :D
