View Full Version : Can you use USB "GND" pin for a ground in vmods?

just wondering, i just did the vdd and vdimm mods for my nf7, and i used the GND pins from the USB connections for the ground connections. asking here first before i power it on :)

personally, i dont think it matters at all.

dont hold me liable tho.;)

hope somebody can confirm soon for ya.

Sure... ground is ground.

I tend to like the mounting screw holes though.

however, let me warn that if there is potential on that pin because you hooked your mod to it, and you use the USB, you have a good chance of violating USB spec.

I have a question, why?

I mean, why not just stick it to a pci slot?

not using USB here, so all good :) would enabling or disabling USB in the bios make a difference? like would the pins still be live even if i have it disabled?

huh? a pci slot? umm, right. i choose the USB connection because it's cleaner layout on the motherboard

Hey stang I would disable it just to be on the safe side ;) , but like klepto just mentioned ground is ground :D

thanks guys...

ok, now to get my motherboard working again... i spilled water on it earlier, hopefully tomorrow it'll work; i tell yah, i have the WORST luck, and i spend so much time preparing.

if you spilled something on your board that is conductive (most surfactants, actually, make water very conductive) you will leave a conductive film on your board. I happened to soak my northbridge on an A7N8X-Deluxe... it nuked the AGP line.

The only way that I know of fixing it is a DI water wash.

A ground is a ground, as they said up top, but dont make the mistake a friend of mine made by thinking that Pin #1 for any port in the manuals for your NF7 is the ground pin.

Stang, consider posting pics or emailing em to me as I am doing the Vcore, Vdd, Vdimm mods on a NF7-S real soon?

What resistors did you use for the Vdd/Vdimm? I am guessing a 5/10k or so will work fine for the Vdimm, but what of the Vdd...? I have read that a 5/10k works here as well. That surprised me as you have to use a 470ohm fixed with a 1MOhm vr inline with it.

I used 10k on the vdd, and 1k on the vdimm.

Why bother doing vcore on an NF7? It doesn't provide stable voltage anywhere near as high as the bios allow you to set it.

Its best to try and use the same ground plane as the IC you are modding.

But in most cases providing that your ground is definatley ground then you will be OK.

Per Holst I go also go for ground on the IC or nearest suitable
IC other wise I tend to wrap around M/Board mounting screws.

I myself would lean away from attaching to the USB datalines
with them being communication IC chips they may not be true
gound in the normal sense and could be switchable in state if
they run in isolation.

If unsure just check with a multimeter while PC is off.

do you know which IC's are suitable for ground connections on the NF7??

i have no clue, and would like my mods to be as clean as possible. thanks

Sorry never had a NF7 so cannot say

but if you quote the coding on the IC's your connecting to
I can tell you which leg of that IC is Ground.

Are these soldered mods or grabbers ?

If you cant solder to the IC then someone else will need to
give you a tip for ground mounting.
