...sorry in advance if this has been asked a million times.....

In evaluating rigs, we use RAC as a figure of merit. In looking closer at a rig type I've been interested in, I have a question on RAC. This rigs RAC is much lower than it's seven day average.

Is RAC calculated on a month time frame? If so, the numbers I'm seeing make sense.

Thx,
Bob

Depends on the stats site, but yeah, WCG RAC is the whole month's average.
Which rig is it you are looking at?

Actually I beleive BOINC stats uses a monthy average but that WCG works on a total so it moves much slower both up and down..

You are correct Dave.

Well this rig here (http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=host&proj=bwcg&hostid=1202876) on Free-DC.

I had dreams of making a "Sears Tower" cruncher out of these, only to find I can only stack one expansion board on top..... It wouldn't stop me from building a low-rise apartment complex out of them if the numbers work out, and I can get enough expansion boards..........;)

I think Skycrane has a few of those Quad 8356 systems? Just check his PPD ;)
Or, see my Quad 8347HE for comparison... it's clocked a little lower but you get the idea. I'd say around 35-37k PPD for a Quad 8356 (on cancer projects, might do better elsewhere).

3 of those should slightly beat Dave's machine. Or match my upcoming mainrig, because I intend to run higher clock speeds than our dear Dave :D

This looks pretty similar to a nicely clocked i7 (860 or 920) in ppd

How would it compare in price/performance and performance/watt?

Have a hard time seeing it win in the power area as 4 CPUs?

How much do they cost?

No idea about price/performance, performance/watt the i7 wins, and a Gulftown/Westmere smothers it.
But not a problem for bob, at 5 US-cents per KWH.. me WANTS!

Yup, the rig I linked is Skycrane's lone rig running WCG only. We've been tracking it for a bit, but I guess we need to see it run a bit longer to get accurate RAC. It's looking like your estimate of 35k WCG points might be right on the mark.

It's clear to me that I'll have to do something to keep you guys from running me over with those new fast rigs.... Dak is coming up too.....

And yes, with power at 5 cents per KWH, I can consider this rig.

Thx,
Bob

I hate to ask this lame question, but I did a google search and I couldn't find my answer...

What is RAC?
