Lets have a go at guessing the ppd

GeForce GTX 480 : 512 SP, 384-bit, 295W TDP, US$499

GeForce GTX 470 : 448 SP, 320-bit, 225W TDP, US$349

(this is the latest info I've read)

60k for the 480
40k for the 470

OldChap

I'm going for....

470 = 52k
480 = 61k

Otis11
03-18-2010, 12:24 PM
470: ~55K
480: ~63k (59k if 480 Shaders)

Based for 675 Mhz clock speeds... that'd be my best guess.

Interesting topic ... WAGs PPD based on WAG specs

I'm gonna go with 120k for the 480.
I'm thinking with a few more shaders (if 512) that a 295 then bump up to GDDR5 and then factor in the architecture improvements.
For what we are doing I think these cards are going to be freaking great.
Don't forget, GPUGrid is currently working through beta issues for another 25% improvement
If I'm wrong then I still get to kick some ascii with my 295 :sofa:

surely a 295 will do 50k+ ??

I'm expecting the 470 to equal the 295

Well, all other equal, the 480 at same clock should be

(512-448)/448 = 64/448 = 0.1428 or 14% faster/higher ppd roughly...

I was debating on the 480 but figure why dump money into multiple projects rather just get some 5870's and game. Spend the rest of my money crunching for WCG and the electric bill to go with :) Electric rate would be redicoulous too, calculations would put me at roughly $35/month to run one 24/7.

zalbard

It may be debatable for gaming, but for crunching there is only one card to get - GTX4x0.

Holy crap thats a difference. will have to wait for a good deal before I bite, but the cost should make up for more than a few of the current cards.
There are going to be some changes between team positions this year I think.

Looking forward to the results SC

@ Pulsar: according to the anandtech review. The GTX 480 folds 3.5x faster than a GTX 285. So I think it will be even better than 2 GTX 295s.
Definately worth the cost compared to production

Question though; is the 480 worth the premium over the 470? I would love to get a bunch of the single slot cards.

May have to sell off the rest of my GTX 275's and GTX 260 and get a couple of these cards

The long story is that while I was ordering my 480 online with EVGA my wife walks into the room ... I stop what I was doing so I could pay full attention to our ensuing *conversation*. A bit later I finish placing the order but it tells me I ordered a 470? I go back to change to a 480 but it won't let me. Apparently during the *conversation* with my wife, EVGA's 480 went from being in stock to "Inform me" (or whateverathehell EVGA calls it).

I now have it on backorder with Microcenter so i will likely not see it for, what a couple of weeks? What's the current estimate on general availability?

what option do you guys think is best? GTX 470 or 480? how much more performance will the 480 give over the 470? Also many say that we should wait for the next version/update on these cards; what do you think?
I am really tempted to sell my 275's/260 to get a couple cards, but not sure with the heat/noise issues brought up. also the fact that these suck up some serious juice.

anyone want to se the facts straight, or is it too early to tell?

And yeah... I'm not to sure on this either. I'm debating getting one and running my 260 in phyX.

But then I'm thinking I'm building my brother a computer in less than a year... If I wait for that, I can give him my 260 and then load up on the shrink...

Or then lookin at pickin up some of the cheap 2xx's but don't know if it's worth it for the price...

Everything is in the air as far as I can tell... If anyone has any info...

gtx480 offers best performance.
it costs 40% more
20% faster.
they run at the same temps
the 480 uses 25% more power
its not as loud as the 470

if the 480 does pull 80K to 100K and i had the money i would buy it. i really dont see an update coming soon. we might see a refresh on 28nm with 6gpc's for a total of 768sp's. the lower end 400 series might be better options too. i think they will be out in a few months.

GPUGrid should be getting 1x480 and 1x470 later this week so they can test new versions of thier app as the current one crashes on 470/480.
