I recently bought an EVGA GTX 285 SC to do a quick and small upgrade!

I am runnig Windows 7 64bit and my current Video Card is EVGA GTX 280 SC.

From what I understand, both cards use the same driver package. Shoudl I:

A) Sinply remove the GTX 280 SC, and install the GTX 285 SC, or

B) I should go to Device Manager, uninstall the GTX 280 SC and then install the GTX 285 SC?

Which would be a better way of doing it?

Wow, you wasted money for nothing man. That's not an upgrade, it's a die shrink. If I was your I'd take back the card and get my money back, then if you insist on NVIDIA wait for Fermi to roll around in a couple of weeks.

Did I say "Upgrade"? LOL My mistake, I should have said an Update!!

Just for future reference so you save money, Die shrink upgrades are barely worth it. Always wait for the next gen. Because Fermi is out in about a week and you could have gotten a GTX 470 or 480 which is probably twice the power of GTX 280. I remember thikning about upgrading from 3 GTX 280 to 3 GTX 285 but my overclock on the GTX 280 was much higer than a stock GTX 285.

Understood! But speaking in general terms, what is the proper procedure for chaning the video card?

you know you can flash a GTX 280 to a GTX 285, but the speed on the 280 will have to be decreased or you could voltage mod the gtx 280. basicly you could run them in SLI

rams are way faster on 285... I just pop the card in, let windows and the nvidia driver detect it, thats all... if I get weird results I will do a de-reinstall...

all stupid comments aside, at least the ones from the guys who question your decision, what you need to do is remove your drivers and reinstall your card. Fresh driver install is always the best course of action.

I won't call them stupid to be polite! Its ok that they are giving their opinnion and I do understand! I do sometimes question myself but the case is I have two PCs and my other PC only has a EVGA 8800 GTX. So now I will bump the 280 SC over and will try to sell the 8800 GTX! Then wait a few days (weeks perhaps) and when the prices on the 5870s have been lowered, then bump again!

But, Computurd, thank you for ultimately answering my question! That was refreshing!! :)

Should I use Driver Cleaner or Driver Sweeper too?

I did the upgrade per your recommendations and its all good so far. But had a question:

When I run EVEREST Ultimate and I look at the GPU infomration it says the core speed is at "301 MHz (Originaly 675 MHz)". What does that mean. Is the card runing at 301 MHz? It should be 675 MHz????

The video card has clocked down to 2D clocks.

Perfectly normal - just make sure it clocks up when you go into 3D mode when gaming.

Oh! I understand now. Thanks.

So how do you check the clock when you are in 3D mode?

Personally I use Rivatuner, but you can also use EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner.

Just turn on the OSD (on-screen display) and it can overlay the clocks and temps in-game (or alt-tab out of the game and you'll see the 3D clocks).

Hope this helps :).

Excellent! Thanks.

I have installed EVGA Precision, is there a reason you prefer Rivatuner?

I have a Logitech G15 keyboard and like to have GPU clocks, temps, fanspeed etc on the LCD display (also CPU temps).

It's very handy, especially with the latest fan controller issue with the 196.75 drivers, I can keep an eye on everything while in game or just idling

great advice up there^. they downclocking is supposed to help with power consumption..afterburner is a great tool also if you run furmark bench you will see that the clocks max out

Thanks to all you guys! Now I have to find a good thread on OCing this card on "AIR"!
