I will be running ATI as my primary 3D gpu, and was thinking of getting a dedicated PPU. Im considering the GeForce GT 240, since its the most powerfull yet less power hungry card (Not requiring 6 pin power cable)

So anyone tried this out for a dedicated Physx PPU? What are your thoughts, experience, and suggestions?

Heres the specs...

GPU Clock 550 MHz
Shader Clock 1340 MHz
Stream Processors 96
Bus Type PCI-E 2.0
Memory Interface Bus (bit) 128
Memory Size 1024 MB
Memory Clock 1600 - 3400 MHz
Microsoft® DirectX® Support
Shader Model Support 4.1
Open GL Optimization and Support
Minimum Power Requirement 350W

Its more than enough for PhysX.

Here's some bench results to give you an idea: http://physxinfo.com/news/1278/gt-240-as-dedicated-physx-card-benchmarks/

Cool, thanks for the link. Ordered the GT240 after I saw those benchies :D

I was going to go with a 9600GT to compliment my GTX-260 since it's cheaper, but looking at those results I'm wondering if the 240 would be the better PhsX card.

The GT 240 would use less power too.

Wonder if it can run passive... Extremely interesting...

EDIT: Jesus!!

Not many titles support PhysX anyway....

Yeh but still... for some of the cool titles that do have PhysX, a GT240 for about 50 bucks (Euros) is a very cheap and easy addon.

Gaul...do you have to use the 195.81 drivers or do the 196's work too with the mod ?
Thanks

No, you need at least a 8600GTS to run physX, and I do recomend a GTS240 or GTS 250 for that task.

ThanksI'm using 196.21 drivers for my 8800GT, they work pretty well :)

It's not the best option, but you can use it for PhysX, and it will be much faster than just software

lol more heatsink than card

btw does memory size (1gb/512mb) impact noticeably on physx

do you have to install the the actual nvidia graphics drivers or just the physx drivers?

well as long as I see BATMAN need 412 MB 4 PhysX

yup, install nvidia driver first, not only physX

After seeing this I'm thinking my idea of buying a GTX260 now and Fermi soon then demoting my GTX260 to PhysX should rather end up as:

Fermi: Graphics + crunching while idle
GTX260: Crunching 24/7
GT240: PhysX + crunching while idle

Is that a better idea?

Unfortunatly a 1GB GDDR version costs double that, 100 euros, which doesnt seem worth it

Well the 240 draws 50W or so tops? so you wont notice that probably, you'll notice a fermi or 260 crunching though, both chruching together takes 400W or so?

So perhaps I should add one anyway, would you say their price/performance factor for crunching is quite good?

Looks good, a question though, is it alright to put these "physx" cards on 4x slots? I hope performance isn't affected much, if at all. Also, ATI+Nv drivers only works in windows 7? Do we need cracks/patches for this?

What's a good GT240 card? I'm looking for a single slot one, so it doesn't take up too much space. But I would also like to be able to control the voltage, so I'll have a bigger OC headroom. Can anyone recommend me a good one? Or can you control the voltage on all GT240 models? Then I'll just go with whatever is cheapest, while still being single slot and GDDR5.

It's single slot and I'm pretty sure with EVGA's Precision app you can adjust voltage.

My bad, should've told I can't order from the egg, as I don't live in the US. These are basicly all the cards I can order. Wonder if all cards support software increases in voltage, either via bios modding or afterburner-like applications.

Edit: The cheapest single slot seems to be the Asus one. Wonder if it supports overvolting?
