As most of you know, i'm more active in the amd forum than here (it must be my second post here :))

I plan to move from AMD toward Intel (driver issue is my main reason) for my main rig.

I'd like to know what Intel rig would be about the same power as my actual rig (only take into account the mobo and cpu). I'm also on a thight (very thight) budget so i'd like to have an option not too expensive but that i'll be able to upgrade later

I was thinking of a nice celeron that i'll be able to oc, and maybe then move to a p4 (or try to get a cheap p4 in the classified) but i know nothing in intel products, and in mobo's for intel plateform (i've been too long out of the intel kingdom). I'm a little confused by all the northbridge there is and the number of mobo

ps i'm an abit fan and so far i've never been disappointed by their products, but if there's an option that is as good and cheaper, i'm willing to try

This is an easy decision....read this and it will answer all your questions.

Hum i think i got my answer but now what if i oc a celeron will it compete with a barton?
What if i decide to shell out some more and get me a p4, what min frequency should i choose and how much can i oc it (on air)?

me i whould go for the celeron 2.6 and a mobo 848P. But that mobo is not really good for upgrade;)

The chip is 170$ and the mobo(msi 865PE cheaper) 130$

i want something that oc nicely and that i'll be able to easily upgrade and not too expensive if possible (i know i'm asking too much :))
I think that i can easily find a 2.4C used so that might be a good option

can you spend 300$-320$ on only the mobo and the CPU, or it have to be cheaper then that??

i'd like it to be a tad cheaper, like around 250$

I saw the abit IS7-E (what's the diff with the other's letters?), is it a good mobo? How does it compares against other mobos?

skate2snow

it looks like a very good mobo and cheap:D. the letter is to identifie what chipset its.

Not a lot of options for an $80 mobo....are there even any 865's that cheap? I know the IS7 is one of the lowest priced but I don't think its that low...

AHH no.

but it depends on what your Competing it with. Game's forget it. You lose a lot on a celeron. Video encoding isnt bad.

I've got a 2.2 celeron in my Shuttle Mini box HTPC. Clocked @ 150fsb or 3.3ghz.

It's always on 24/7, it has a Leadtek Winfast deluxe TV/tivo card in it.

Cheap board, check neweggs refurbs from time to time. I scored a IC7 for $85 last month and a IS7-e for $59. Both came complete.

Sticking in your budget though, you'll get a lot more bang for your buck going with a AMD setup.

Yeah i said it in the intel forum!!! Got a problem!!!:D JK!!!!

But you want Intel now. But it's not wise to skimp on your MB choice.

hes taking a P4, probably a 2.4C(its the best)

antipop

So if i go for a p4 2.4C and an IS7, would that be a good combination? (ps i don't need all the stuff in a mobo, i just need sata and usb2, i don't need sound and firewire)
I could get the 2.4C at around 150$ used and the IS7 around a 100$ new, so i would be at 250$

ps is the difference between an IS7 and an IC7 big enough?

The IC7 gets you speed basically, 875 boards are 5-10% faster than 865 boards because of PAT.

hum, it's getting clearer
So i think i'll go for a 2.4C + IC7 and i hope i'll get good perf with that and a good oc
If i sell my cpu, mobo and wc i'll be able to cover the price and get a good aircooling

My decision is made (or i think so), i'll go as skate2snow said for a p4 2.4C and an IC7 (or maybe an IS7, does the diff in perf justify a diff of $35 in price?)

I think that i'll buy them new cause it's just a bit more expensive than in the classified and i'll have to pay shipping only once.

To get it at the best price i need to get it in the us, does anyone know a good place that would ship it to france? (why newegg does ship outside of the us arrrrrgggggghhhhh)
Or maybe a trustee person could ship it to me if i pay all the expenses?

ยงยงยงยง youll never have good price in france!!!(je suis francais...LOL) but sorry theres no american ship to france:(

I'm not a fanboy but i wish amd could get some market share from intel and solve some of their problem, i mean competition is always better. It forces intel to come up with new idea and better stuff (a bit like ati and nvidia)

However i had many problems with my amd setup and i don't have anymore the will and time to take care of it and always mess up with my comp, so i'm going for the more idiotproof sys

ps i'm also very interested to see HT and how it performs

BTW: my dad is buying a AMD system a 2400XP i think so i will experiment AMD a little bit
