LOL, well if you had 4 of them and a mb that would let you OC then I'd say MAYBE ! ;)

Alright, I guess it's about useless then.

Thanks for the info Major.

oh and btw, that's a PERSON!

And look it says it's built for 3D simulation/modeling....probably is able to run 3D Mark!!! It'd be funny if some engineer at Cray wanted to mess up the ORB.

10 000 times 80+w = 0.8Mw

That small fan on your window sill will have it's work cut out Opp ... I hope it has got 2 or more speeds.

It didn't say...but I'm willing to bet this beast (and beasts like it) use forced air cooling with BIG AIR CONDITIONERS, maybe even liquid cooling! Just ponder the cost for a sec' 10,000 Opterons @ min $2.5Million (and e don't know the model Opteron) plus the rest of the rig...I'm guessing $300Million dollar rig.

ahhh, Cray supercomputers:D

Been a fan of that ingenious engineer for many years.

You wanna see supercomps?? 2 years ago we took AMtrack from the East coast to Denver to visit my wifes family in Boulder ,Colorado. It was a dual vacation for me, as it was a mission for me to go to the edge of town..on a hill bordering the Rockies 600ft above Boulder, to visit NCAR.

The US National Center for Atmospheric Research. You may ask why in hell I'd want to go to a super weather facility??

Because the place has an incredible, huge room of supercomputer banks by Cray, IBM and SGI to name a few. Its glassed in and can be observed. Just an incredible display indeed.

This place houses on display Crays original supercomputer...the Cray 1, which is now retired and on display in the lobby. I'll dig up a pic of it to put up here, but it looks like something out of "Lost in Space" :)

That Cray 1 used super cooled cooling if I remember rightly. I bet if you went back in time and told them you'd have similar in your home computer they'd think you were mad

" And what, Mr Futureman, do you use your super duper cooled home computer for then, what would require such extreme cooling .... ?"

" Oh, I just run a graphical program over and over again "

" Why ? "

" To score points "

( Cray engineer looks at bourbon bottle like in the movies )

" Jeez, I really must stop drinking this stuff ...."

you can use an 848 Opteron (single chip) in an FX board and treat it as such... it will prolly OC very well, aside from the fact you're stuck with 11x multi

For your reading and viewing pleasure, let me introduce some incredible computing power. Take the time to read thru it all, it is definitely worth the trip to see this stuff in person. There are links to all of their computers with configuration info and links to the manufacturers, its all fascinating indeed.

Here is the main page with the history list of their supercomputers (http://www.scd.ucar.edu/computers/gallery/index.html)

Here is the venerable Cray 1-A (http://www.scd.ucar.edu/computers/gallery/cray/cray1a/cray1.html)

NCAR Computer User Info (http://www.scd.ucar.edu/main/computers.html)

Enjoy my friends !

Mr Icee, I have'nt checked those links yet but I will. I am also a fan of Seymour.

This is from the Guinness book of world records. 1980 edition
Most powerful and fastest computer.

The worlds most powerful and fastest computer is the CRAY-1, designed by Seymour R, Cray of Cray research, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota. The clock period is 12.5 nanoseconds and memory ranges up to 1,048,576 64-bit words, resulting in a capacity of 8,388,608 bytes of main memory. It attains speeds of 200,000,000 floating point operations per second. With 32 Cray DD-19 disk storage units, it has a storage capacity of 7.7568E10 bits. Floating decimal points may vary from 10E-2500 to 10E2500.
The cost of a midrange system is $6,500,000.

Here's a bigger pic of the Cray Redstorm system which will utilize 10,000 AMD Opteron CPU's. This is a 90 Million dollar project.

Eric.....I could see you rigging a 9800 XT to this rig for 3DMark purposes...as a matter of fact....what do you guys think???...but I THINK thats Eric in the pic looking to install the XT for his next 2001 run:D

No use of a 9800XT here. The bunch of opterons would always be waiting for the card. Software mode would be faster...

But 10000 9800XT's :slobber:

The CRAY-1A had a 12.5-nanosecond clock, 64 vector registers, and 1 million 64-bit words of high-speed memory. It could execute over 80 megaflops, but higher rates were possible with programs taking advantage of the vector features of the computer.

That's from one of those links. I just ran a quick Sandra bench and it does 6,600+ MFLOPS on my daily settings (250x12 5:4 2-2-2-5). I bet they never would have imagined we would have this kind of power in a small home system for daily use.

I doubt Sandra is comparable to whatever they use to benchmark those things but you get the idea.

so to get the performance you're getting it'd cost them roughly $536mill, that is if they had architecture that could scale up to 82.5 times of the cray-1a

:D
