Are they the way to go? What are their drawbacks?

They were the way to go, before SSD's. They are still good for games. You could always buy an SSD for boot and Raptors to store data as they have much faster access times than all others HDD's.

Drawback: Being a mechanical drive, access times, low 4K etc...

But some of the reports I have read for dependability are scary. Did I just find some bad reports?

Do you have the links. I could look into it.

No, but what do you know about them? How much faster is SSD than a raptor? What about SCSI?

I use a raptor, not the newer version. I have the 74GBADF version. The newer version is much better and faster in all the areas.

There are many comparisons in the net. This is the most important test for me when choosing an SSD over an HDD. http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3631&p=22

Read through the article http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3631 and if you still have a question, then ask :)

Well I would personally prefer an SSD for various reasons, power, lightweight, no need to turn them off as they don't get hot, faster access times, amazing read and write random speeds etc...

SCSI are good though spin faster but still being a mechanical drive and have the same problems as raptors and a tad expensive.

Edit: forgot an important link to be read through http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3531&p=1

By the way you can get the Intel X25-V for just $129 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167025&Tpk=x25-v more here tests done by the member SteveRo http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=245120

I hope this helps,

Are there comparisons that show how much faster ssd is than a VR?

Haven't you tried looking on the net???

One single google check found this:

It's hard to quantify in a nice, neat package the benefit of an SSD. STR doesn't tell you much about what actual performance will be like, after all. Random 4K is better and combined with IOPS can give an idea. You really just need to use one. If you're going from a regular drive to an SSD the difference will be clear.

Some of us like our mechanical monsters. :) I just received a second set of four MBA3147RC 15K SAS drives today for my system.

Just to chime in while SSD is nice, I would wait just a bit longer. Try and get buy with what you can, like a nice 1TB Black drive. Then in a year you can move to a SSD and make the black storage.

What about an RE drive from WD?

if u can find the samsung f3 they are faster than the raptors and have the same access time if u short them with a raid partition for windows, its about the same per GB if u short the f3 or the vr, so i dont see the point in them for the current drives. if they get those new laptop 250 or 333 platters that would make them viable again imo but untill then i would stay away.

and sata6 is worthless for mechanical drives atm they can barely hit 120-140MB/s so that over 280MB/s isnt going to happen.
