We got a hold of a few pics and specs of the upcoming Asus M4A89GTD Pro motherboard, based on the new AMD chipset.

Except of S-ATA 6Gb and USB 3.0, it will feature DirectX 10.1 IGP with 128MB Sideport memory and also two new interesting dip switches: one that's labeled "Core Unlocker" and the other one "Turbo Key II". I wonder what they do ? :D

why the hell is that height for the 8 pin connector? it's awful

Probably it is easier to reach between the mosfet cooling the the I/O connectors.

It's a new standard, now we can all measure who has a longer one
It looks like there might be a capacitor on the west side from the 8pin,
they probably don't want people hitting it (and RMAing the board possibly)

I'm just saying, but is it possible to do hardware Turbo mode (what i7/i5/i3 has) by using the chipset? I'm just guessing what the Turbo Key II might be. What's Turbo Key I?

The mosfet heatsink probably goes up pretty high, they most likely did that to make it flush with the top of it so you can easily plug the power in.

are we about to have another is it dx11 or dx10.1 argument? im so lost as to which the IGP will have

all in all, i think AMD might have some really nice boards for 2010

I have a few heatsinks that the extra height would make easier to plug/unplug the connector, especially useful for beching without removing that.

don't most modern bios have a core unlock function ? it all depends on the CPU if you can enable it :p

Probably the hardware way is the safest way :), especially those times when you're not sure if the BIOS applies all the settings. As far as the Turbo Key thing is concerned, the first version turned your power-on button into an instant overclocking button, just as it was the "Turbo" button on the old 486's.

Of course, now we can only speculate as i have no clear info on these two technologies.

Anyways, does "Core Unlock" lock a dual core into a quad? This is interesting:up:

Hm, looks like ASUS is trying to copy MSI's design.
Can we actually see a full picture of the board?

looks quite promising but i'm still waiting for an affordable micro ATX board with 2 real x16 slots and at least 1 more pcie x1 slot :(

I don't have a full board pic, but you can see the earlier version displayed at CES here (https://www.computerbase.de/bildstrecke/27955/1/) for example.

Just bought P7H55-M PRO for my htpc build. It also has “turbo key” feature. Basicaly this means that you can turn PC power switch button into “overclocking” button.

BTW, so 890 series have DX10.1, not DX11?

Except of S-ATA 6Gb and USB 3.0,

"Aside from"/"Besides" would be better choices, as they mean "it has
SATA6Gb and USB3.0, and also some other stuff", while except sounds
more like "it has some stuff, but no SATA6Gb and USB3.0".

why the hell is that height for the 8 pin connector? it's awful

probably because there will be a tall vrm cooling module that would make
a normal-height connector hard to reach.

dude, this is AMD :p:

I think this "Core unlocker" will just be a fancy name for the same thing
available for over a year now in bios with SB7xx-series chips...

I was talking about Turbo Key II.

Micutzu explained it well enough.

Why asus doesn't like vertical sata? :shakes:

they are vertical, except for the ones on the side where the graphics card comes out from, and the reason for those is very obvious.

Nice to finally see them put some effort into tarting up the AMD boards as well.

Vertical connectors are fine as long there out of the way of expansion cards and once inside the case, they grant better accessibility than the 90 degree ones. Ever tried to unplug/replug a SATA cable obscured by a 5870 inside a cramped mid tower?
