I am getting mad trying to overclock my Core i7 920
I have a Core i7 920 3913B192 and Asus P6T (not the deluxe !) with 6GB of OCZ 1600 DDR3 7-7-7-24 Platinum kit

I overclocked the cpu to 4217 with HT ON and Turbo Mode ON with 1.381 vCoreand QPI/DRAM at 1.381 too cooled by OCZ Vendetta 2 + LGA 1366 Brackets + AC MX-2

I run my PC 24/7 and playing games and such with no problems at all EXCEPT for Prime95 workers stop in 2 seconds in Blend Test and Large FTT but small FTT is fine and load temps are in the 80s (HOT ?!)

I decided to get another mobo and had my eyes on Gigabyte EX58-EXTREME which I bought it slightly used for a good price (300$) but my EXACT problem remained + A WHOLE NEW PROBLEM : I can't get the CPU to 4.2 without the PC restarting randomly even when Internet browsing/Movie watching although I played games for along time and did some benchmarks
When I lower the BCLK to 196x21 instead of 200x21 there are no restarts but the Prime95 workers stop remain !

Here are my voltages :

I used DVID and my vcore is 1.27500 (Normal) + 0.05000

Any suggestions ?!

first run 19 multi (turbo off) x 200 prime blend. If it runs fine, then try more vcore, and if need more vcore may run into problems with your cooling. If it crashes then loosen ram timings to 8,8,8 24 and try again, and also try 6 mem and 13 for uncore, and also make sure you dont have a bad stick of ram or imc.

Basically need to figure out if it is cpu problem or bclk/mem/unc problem, the fact you can run small ffts but not blend/large suggests the latter.

Thank you very much for your reply

I've tried what you suggested with the following sequence

1-Tried 19X Multi and 200 BCLK Turbo OFF and P95 workers stopped immediately

2-Upped vcore to 1.3 instead of 1.2 and P95 workers stopped immediately

3-Then with 1.3 vcore I got the RAM timings to 8-8-8-24 and P95 workers stopped immediately

4-With the same voltage I got the Uncore and Memory to 13X and 6X respectively (1200Mhz RAM and 2600Mhz Uncore) and P95 workers stopped immediately

The strange thing is that I exited P95 and ran it again but it took 1 minute till the forst worker stopped :confused:

Could it be my RAM ?

It has DDR3 1066 chips so I guess it is some kind of OCed RAM

What really annoys me is that the EX58-EXTREME seems to not like 200x21which Asus P6T Vanilla worked happily with !

All ram will be DDR3 1066 according to the bios.... and yes to me sounds like ram went bad.

I would take 2 sticks out, leave 1 in then do memtest 5 passes on each at stock 1600 mhz, 7,7,7 21. Then do that for all 3 and see how many bad sticks you have. Then rma ram if bad. Really i would start with just 1 pass each though, my guess is one bad stick will get hosed with errors in first pass.

I had same thing happen to me, my OC started going bad, turned out to be 1 stick of ram, now I have 2 sets of 6gb ram, I was too impatient to wait on rma.

I bet 21x200 will work fine on gb extreme once you get ram problem worked out.

I've tried each stick for one pass at 1600 7-7-7-24 1.64v and they were ok
and also tried the three stick with the same settings and also passed ok

That was with Memtest 86+ DOS

In Windows 7 64bit stock settings (CPU) with memory @1066 7-7-7-19 (Auto) Prime95 completed 2 Tests and I stopped it

But at 1600 10-9-9-22 (Auto) workers stopped immediately as usual and with 1600 7-7-7-24 workers also stopped

Should I test the 3 sticks for 5 passes and see ?! :confused:

If you ran cpu at stock, and just ram at 1600 7,7,7 24 and it stopped, but worked at 1066, sounds like your ram is not capable of running at stock....I assume the only other thing that was OCed was the uncore other than mem multi. That really sounds like ram. I would try running 5 passes at 1600 7,7,7 with all 3 sticks.

Also, maybe first, try running prime 95 blend everything on stock, except mem multi on 12, uncore on 25, so mem is 1600 7,7,7 24 and vdram 1.64-1.66 and qpi 1.34. If that fails, try increasing vdram to 1.7 just to see, no need to run it there longer than 15 mins to see if prime works. If that solves issue, again sounds like your ram cant run stock, ie 1600 at the 1.65 v it is supposed to.

Here are some funny things

I did as you told me to do with QPI/VTT set to 1.335v with 1.64-1.66-1.7v then tried QPI/PLL (as I didn't know which QPI !) set at 1.34v instead of normal 1.1v

QPI/VTT@1.355v (QPI PLL left at auto) :

1.7v = Ran fine for a minute then a worker stopped !

1.66v = Worker stopped immediately then I exited P95 and re-ran it and it worked for a minute then a worker stopped !

1.64v = Few workers stopped immediately

QPI PLL @1.34v (QPI/VTT left at auto) :

1.7v = Workers stopped immediately

1.66v = Workers stopped immediately

1.64v = PC Restarted !!!!!!

again, sounds like ram is bad, try memtest with all three ram sticks for 5 passes.
