"In the GPU section AMD is also said to plan new models of the Radeon HD 5700 and HD 5800 series as well as a 5970 X2."

5970 is already a X2 card, so wth will that beast be?

maybe it's a dual PCB card or they mixed up X2 and 2.0 and the 5970 2.0 is an 850MHz or dual 5890 card.

Well, It would somewhat make sense, since 5970 had kinda lowish clocks... And since AMD hyped the "massive OC headroom" of the card.

Two 5970 glued together ? Doubtful since AMD doesn't like sandwich design ...

I'll be impressed if this is true, not from a performance aspect, scaling might be poor, but from a thermal design perspective.

It isn't possible with a TDP wall of 300w, which even the normal 5970 was downclocked to stay under

Their source is ExtremeTech who also said about a 5970 x2 but they were referring to the normal 5970...

So i think its a error in copy - paste... :(

OMG, a quad GPU?

This may be a spelling error, but we got Quad cores after double core CPUs!

While I doubt the possibility of a quad GPU 5970, a die shrink HD5970 with faster clocks could be possible. Smaller die would mean less power consumption and they could raise the clocks to HD5870 speeds. Though that probably isn't too likely either given that Global Foundries has not started production on a smaller node and TSMC can barely get 40nm right.....

Rumors say:

The refresh will be a 40nm part @1Ghz (like 4870-4890)

They'll move next gen process to GloFlo 28nm

Amen to that!

Thats insane. It should be 5890 and 5990.

Quad GPU? Have a look at HIS Radeon HD 5970 CrossFire (http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/Radeon_HD_5970_CrossFire) :D

I wouldn't mind a 1200SP GPU (700 Mhz?)...at a $175 price point... I can't shell out for a 5850 or 5870.

4 GPUs wouldn't be possible in even a 500W power envelope I'd think. We're already at the spec limit with a regular X2, thus the lower than normal clocks on the 5970.

Makes very little sense due to poor CF scaling anyway. Not to mention the price.

Poor CF scaling? CF scales incredibly well.

Interesting. I was very disappointed with the 5970 that had lower clocks. They should just call this card the 5870x2 or whatever, but hey, whatever works and I'm always glad to see ATI/AMD bring out new high end hardware to the table.

CF works fine here. The price of the 5970 is a lot better than the price of 2 5870s.

When talking about going from 2 to 4 GPUs? Not to mention going from 3 to 4... The performance difference isn't worth it in 98% of cases.

Actually dude, with the latest drivers Tri Fire and Quad Fire scale great too. Whether or not it's worth the money is a matter for the person who's buying it to decide ;)

Something that hasn't been mentioned... .maybe the 5970 x2 is just more memory rather than more cores. What about a 5970 with 4GB of memory (2GB per core) instead of 2GB of memory (1GB per gpu)? That might be what the 5970 x2 is.

Another option is that it changes the outputs. Perhaps the 5970 x2 is the eyefinity edition with six display port out?

If you are thinking it's just more gpu's on one card, I think you are likely mistaken.

I would just like to see the prices drop to reasonable means on the HD5870 HD5970 cards.

This GPU doesnt have scaling issues, what it has is serious CPU need and driver issues on 2560x1600.

Built for eyefinity id say. If you have that kind of money to burn (~1200$) you`d probably have the cash to get 3x30" to fool around with. And in that case these are the only cards capable of providing the muscle to render games.

If this is true then I'm really excited to see its price tag on newegg. :ROTF:

Not possible guys, the limits of PCI-E 2.0 surely wouldn't allow 4 gpu's to share 1 slot. Plus the heat and power would be too much.

yea but CF scales very well.. better than sli IMO. HOWEVER Im interested in the LUCID HYDRA chiped mobo's such as the MSI big bang... gives near perfect scaling with any number of gpu's and different makes as well!

could be the article meant 5990 or whatever the next version of the 5890 will be called?
