There are three 90s Sharps, two newer Samsungs, and Two Panasonics from the 1980s (1984 and 1989 respectively). I would recommend all of these brands since they seem to last forever and thats good. :)

Most people only have one TV. Honestly do you need TVs placed strategically around your house so you don't miss any ad action ? :p:

Samsung seems to have the popular vote, and positive feedback as-well.

I have a 2+ year old Samsung LN52A550. Best TV I've ever owned...

I have an Acer 28inch LCD, and it has been terrific. It's a shame you didn't have
Acer as an option. I only bought it because it was cheep, but after a few years
I still can't see any dead pixels and it works flawlessly. Can't ask for any more than that.

Until last week, none, and happy about it. Then my dad decided that he'd replace his 42" Hitachi plasma with a 50" Samsung one, so I got the Hitachi. Now I've ended up using it as a monitor for my 24/7 rig (which I barely touch, but it's on all the time at least), works just great for watching movies, the only thing is I don't know where to put it... Just sits on the floor as it is now.

I would have taken out Phillips or maybe Mitsubishi as they are much less known/owned than Vizio now days. Or maybe Vizio is just big in my area only... IDK, but where I live almost everyone gets a Samsung LCD, or if they cant afford it then they get a Vizio. Because the Vizio is much cheaper than anything else and offers much higher quality picture than most other brands, at least out of the box anyway.

While Panasonic does have a very nice picture, to say they are "the best" is a matter of opinion. I love how their nicer 1080p plasmas look, but Panasonic is known to have a "softer" image than other plasma TVs. Although if that will change or not no one knows, Panasonic picked up quite a few designers and tech people from Pioneer plasma division (the Kuro people) so Panasonic might be changing quite a bit in their next generation.

I love my Sony 40" V-5100 120hz LCD TV. Samsung wanted a lot more for the same size with fewer connection options and even more if I wanted those connections (which I did), and the picture quality seems the same if properly configured between the two. I game with it in 1080p every day and love it. I have no complaints at all, and I got a good deal on it. The color is great, the backlight is great, the detail is stunning, and performance is also great.

If I could go back, I'd buy this TV again and not think twice about it.

I also think its better looking than the Samsung. I really hate their design, and that ugly platform that holds them up with the skinny clear tube... yuck.

I talked to a professional, he was a customer who worked in a home theater store for about 20 years. He told me not to take the contrast ratios too seriously and look at the pictures my self, and adjust them if I need to in the store, because he said a lot of these companies blow the numbers up and there's no real way to verify them. Is that true? If it is, does that mean Samsung is a lying whore?

EniGmA1987
01-12-2010, 04:50 PM
there is no real way to specify dynamic contrast ratios, only static. That is why LCD manufacturers tell you the dynamic numbers. They can inflate them super high. All manufacturers of LCDs do it, Sony is one of the worst I think. You have to really get down into the specs, not usually found on places where you buy the TV, to find its true static contrast ratio.

Also, true static LCD numbers at best are still only about 25000:1, Plasma TVs have been between 2,000,000-4,000,000:1 static contrast for a long while now. You can find some newer LED LCD TVs with local dimming that have good dynamic numbers of 2,000,000:1. And that way MUST be measured in dynamic as the entire point of local dimming is it produces a dynamic contrast that can change with dark areas of the screen and "produce" real blacks because the backlighting is turned off in that area. It is improssible to truly test a local dimming display for actual perform, ance unless it is done in a dynamic way. The problem is, someone needs to sit down and make a real verifiable way to test dynamic contrast AND get every manufacturer to abide by it.

I presently got a 32" Samsung 1080p LCD TV. I chose Samsung because of its picture quality which very comparable to its branded competitors ans its price was very much lower. And besides, samsung televisions have very good LCD TV ratings (http://www.smartratings.com/electronics/plasma_and_lcds).

Samsung is a very bright, vivid picture for LCD's. Glossier then Sharp's and Sony's, does not make it better, but may be attractive to some, while other hate it. In Plasma's, Panasonic holds up the best, best image retention reduction (less "burn-in") while Samsung and LG both have work to catch up on that. LED's were still very new when I left the TV Business, but look promising, but will change as the advance in the next few years, same for OLED as well. Visio, while being the highest selling TV in the US, is most certainly not the best LCD or Plasma, good for its price, and set to burn your eyes out right out of the box.

Colors of grass are not meant to look radioactive, go to a Football/Baseball/Soccer game and compare how it looks at home, the grass, the field paint, will all look different. Brightness is a trick used by salespeople, and manufactured, to pull your eyes to their sets, I know, I did it plenty, make the TV that makes you money look the best, that’s just how its done.

If you want the most accurate picture, Plasma with ISF Calibration, if you can afford it, or just get a calibration DVD/Blu-Ray to do it at home for hundreds less.

That being said, LCD’s serve a purpose, and a great one at that, small screens, screens for bright rooms with little lighting control (i.e. Windows, glass doors, sky lights). As much as I like to have my computers on my plasmas, they are just to big for browsing, and office functions. LCD, OLED, LED, will all have their advantages, chose wisely for your situation.

After raving about how much I loved my Samsung LN52A550, I started having problems with it a few days ago....

Turning it on resulted in a bunch of clicking (8-10 times) before the set would lite.
It has gotten progressively worse and now the set won't turn on at all (just clicks until I pull the plug)... :shakes:

After doing an internet search for the problem there seems to be thousands of people experiencing the same problem within the 1st 2 years!!

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/home_electronics/samsung_tv.html

I didn't buy the extended warranty, but after seeing this I called Samsung, mentioned that website and they offered to send someone out to fix it free of charge
(as long as it's the Caps/PS) that everyone else is having problems with...

Don't get me wrong.... I still think the set has a beautiful picture, and the fact that they offered to fix it for free (even though it's past the 1yr warranty) is good on their part.
I just thought I should mention this for anyone who may be considering a Samsung set...

Hopefully they actually fixed the problem, and don't just install another faulty module that will go bad in another 2 years....

Pioneer LX 5090 here as my main TV.
Absolutely stunning picture, have it rigged to a media PC, Pioneer LX 71 BD player and SkyHD, wouldn't go for anything else.
As well as the clarity, its the colour depth it produces that sets it apart.

Wow nice looking case, but VERY expensive.

Are you looking at really building an HTPC or just a video playback/internet PC?

I would offer that case as the high end option with 2TB HDDs for storage.

If I were to buy another TV today, it would be a 2010 Panasonic Plasma. The pricing is very competitive with LCDs and the performance just can't be beat.

Speaking of that, the only LCDs in my household will be for my computers. They are certainly not going to be allowed to handle television/movies when a DLP/Plasma will outperform them for less $.

I use LCD TV's in the bedrooms and Kitchen, they run cooler and I don't have to worry about kids running consoles on them for extended periods.
My media system was in a Moneual 312 case, but I just sold the whole system and have ordered a Moneual 972 instead, my main problem was the lack of TrueHD support with the motherboards 785 chipset onboard video.
I have 3 x 1TB drives and a 1.5TB drive to go in it, currently will be using a 4850, but plan to change to a 5000 series GPU with TrueHD support built in (1 thing at a time), was using a SSD drive in old system, but want the extra space from another 1TB drive instead.
I have 200GB of music backed up on it, numerous DVD series, and stacks of BluRay movies, the video playback quality is very good, to the Pioneer, but I want the best sound possible through the surround amp. I normally watch movies first run from BD standalone player and then backup to HDD's for easy access, normally only get original discs out again if I want to show off system or if I want the best sound output.

I've been tinkering, admittedly I have stacks of issues with powerDVD or ATI drivers, latest version seem to be okay, but until I get my new case I can't play about too much, although I could stick the bits in a spare tower case for testing.
I also thought that most movies don't have true LPCM audio tracks on them, they opt for Dolby or DTS formats instead.

So far the audio I get from the original discs played in my standalone player outing True-HD Master, as always been far better than anything from the media PC.

I can stick with the 4850 for a while, it's not like I'm desperate to spend cash if I can avoid it.
