Im thinking of getting a 92mm/80mm Vantec Tornado or a 80mm Delta Xtreme...

But how loud are these things really... Is it possible sitting at the computer for hours without damageing your ears?

Its very possible to sit there and not damage your ears. Now, whether or not the sounds drives your insane is another question.

I think the 80mm version is much whinier and louder than the 92mm one....... and if you've got it on a fan controller, you shouldn't have any problems.

K.. I have a fan controller... But i just found a TT smartfan 2 and that bastard pushes 75cfm and is 48db loud, is this a fan anyone can agree to use for 24/7 use?

Well, the smart fan is adjustable, so even if it isn't turn it down. :)

As to the smart fan 2s I have 4 as case fans. If you room is totally quiet then they can be irritating. However, if you are at like a lan like I am every saturday, I don't even notice the fans. I have mine on a controller since I don't need then full blast while surfing the net. I also have a delta that puts out 48 db on my cpu. Even with that added, it is not bad. I can run the cpu fan full and the case fans on low and it is not to loud at all.

I sleep next to my rig with it on, currently with 2 standard case fans though one of them rattles a bit. Do you think I could sleep through a Tornado too? Thinking of getting 2x 80MM for my case and a 92MM for cpu.

Sure you could sleep next to it, if you sleep with ear plugs in.

IMO the 92MM aint as bad sounding as the 80MM. Less high pitched.

They are both LOUD. The 800mm is 55dBa and the 92mm is a little LOUDER. Can't remember the 92mm specs ATM. Both they LOUD unless you got them on a rheo or in a Fanbus.

Well, My computer is upstairs, and we have a finished basement with insulation and everything.

I could hear it in the basement while watching TV.

I had to 80 mm tornados running....They killed me! Honestly, they are as loud as people say. I tried running them on fan controllers and wasnt satisfied at all. I even did the 7 volt mod on them and they were still loud!!!! THose things are only good for benching

I think that I stick with my 92mm. Enermax;)

I think that my mom, would throw me out from home:stick:

While all you guys were posting i cleaned my rig and turned my CPU fan, so it sucked the air from the heatsink.. My temps went from 59°c -> 51°c

So no need for the Tornado here anymore:toast:

my 92mm Tornado is pretty damn loud even when i've got it at 7v. it's all dependent on what your definition of "loud" is, but generally these fans are considered loud.

on a side note, a friend of mine is running 2 80mm and 1 92mm Tornado in his system and he doesn't think it's too bad. i personally think he is nuts.

i heartily agree with the people above, i have had both 80 and 92mm versions of the tornado and they are both loud, but the 80 is whinier, higher rpms, but i have a fan bus and run it with the speed all the way down and still get great temps.

I have the 92mm on a huge hunk of copper just for testing mobos before I pop them into a phasechange rig. Noise does not bother me as much as most people but I could not live with that 24/7. ;)

it loud but after a few weeks of using it you'll get use to it but then you get tired of hearing while trying to write a school paper.

It is really, really, really loud. I told my friend to get one, with a fan speed controller, but it drew too much current and the fan controller won't work with it, lol. He's stuck running it at full speed.

Got my temps to 49c full load. After removing a lot of the ceramic paste! and 35c idle

does it really help to have the fan "sucking" from the 900u? ive got a 947 so it would be the same concept.. (im an idiot why dont i just try it.... lol

You will find sucking removes the heat better....I was surprised the first time I switched the fan around to see. ;) A nice push/pull would be even better.

I would say..............screw the TT smart fan II, been there done that, you will not get the air pressure you will get with one of the "good fans".

Oh they are very loud, but if you dial it down to about 3000rpm's or so you you will get better performance than a TT at almost full speed.

I've gone through a bunch of fans lately and the 92mm Tornadoes, when fanbussed (Vantec Nexus 201) with the dial turn all the way down, is a tad louder than the Panaflo H1 at full speed. Noisewise, the 92mm is the same as the 80mm but you get more airflow with the 92mm.

At first I was turned off by the noise but I have gotten used to it. Its temporary until I get my watercooling stuffs.
