ATI Radeon HD 5000 Faces Massive Success, Says Company
[12/14/2009 01:06 PM]
by Anton Shilov

ATI, graphics business unit of Advanced Micro Devices, said on Monday that it had shipped over 800 thousand of graphics processing units (GPUs) that support DirectX 11 application programming interface. The rather high number of rather expensive graphics chips sold during the global economic downturn emphasizes the interest towards discrete graphics cards for desktops and PC gaming in general.

The company said that so far it has shipped over 500 thousand ATI Radeon HD 5700-series graphics processing units code-named Juniper and over 300 thousand graphics chips known as Cypress that power ATI Radeon HD 5800-/5900-series graphics adapters. Thanks to partly resolved supply issues with 40nm chips, AMD’s graphics business unit seems to have high chances of shipping around a million of DirectX 11-supporting graphics processors this year.

ATI’s DirectX 11 lineup consists of several offerings and covers performance mainstream, high-end and enthusiast market segments. The most affordable DirectX 11 graphics card – ATI Radeon HD 5750 is available for about $140 in the U.S. – whereas the most expensive – ATI Radeon HD 5970 – costs over $600.

Good sales of the latest graphics cards will help Advanced Micro Devices to post greater revenue and profits for this quarter. AMD reports its results for the current quarter in approximately a month time, on January, 22, 2010.

Shipments of ATI’s new product family were slowed down by poor yields of 40nm chips at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. As a result, the actual demand towards the new high-end graphics cards from ATI/AMD is considerably higher than supply.

At present ATI’s arch-rival Nvidia Corp. does not offer DirectX 11-supporting graphics processors, which is a yet another reason why the demand towards the new Radeon HD 5000 family greatly exceeds supply. DirectX 11 provides better performance and higher quality images in next-generation PC video games.

Blimey that's amazing news!

I've recently even seen 5770's for around 130-145 euro at some places with supply, so this is great.

Now just to get a good supply for all those 58xx cards and they should have great December sales.

So tempted to buy a card, but I've no need for one yet. :(

I think some of you think this is a whole shipment of new cards.
But no, it's how many cards have been shipped since 5870 launch. Anyways, it's a big number.

Low and mid-end are ok and easy to find.
The 5870 & 5970 is very hard to find in stock and of course, there's the terrible price-gouging...

that's quite a bunch of money that is entering to AMD.
If they reach the 1 million mark as it's spoken here, they will earn 230 millions of €

Take into account for this, 600000 pieces @ 150€ (5750/5770) and 400000 pieces @ 350€ (5870's). This will bring a total of 90 million € for the 5770's and 140 million € for the 5870's.
I don't have any idea how much does it cost AMD to manufacture 1 card, but i suppose it costs at maximum, half the price they are sold out, so it's more or less 115000000€ profit, quite nice isn't it?

eric66

they will easily pass 1000000 until fermi launch if tmsc won't screw up again

Haha that's a really funny pic. Exactly what I needed during this rather boring Linux class I'm having atm.

Fermi better be good when it finally arrives, otherwise nvidia will lose a lot of market share in 2010.

Hi, neither AMD nor Nvidia sell cards, they only sell GPUs. And I believe a full Cypress should be selling for around $150, without the RAMs

It's all well & good but out of a monthly amount of ~7,000,000 units it's only around 10% of the total shipped out. Miles better than 0% from ALL the competition (nVidia, intel, S3, matrox etc) though. They could easily sell 3-4x that number if the supply (damn you TSMC) was there.

Heh, that link shows only one of seven SKUs in stock, and when you try to add that one to your cart it indicates that you can only get it as part of a $4,700 bundle. But yeah, it has been getting better, slowly.

Let's check the 5970s now... how many ? What ? None ? Why ? Where ?
And what about the price... hmm... 670$... that's definitely higher than the MSRP... well... just 1 dime higher, right ? :p:

I don't see how that's impossible. Think about how many people are out there world-wide and how many of those cards got shipped to OEMs as well etc.

Besides, if this is an official figure from AMD - as a publicly traded company, they'd be in a whooooolllllle lot more trouble for lying
