Yeah, s1156 turned out to be not really impressive thus far.
Why GTX285 and not new Radeon 5xxx cards with DX11, though?

If you are on a gamer PC, get a 860/P55 + 5870 or 5970 depending on your resolution.

Best price/performance system today!

rampage gene 920 + 5850/70 depending on how much the price drop is (oops)

here in the UK the p55 seems to be very similar in price with x58.. and 860 is a few £££ more then 920.. so its actually more sense to go for the BETTER platform as its cheaper xD

920 ..... but if u can hold out i9 1366 is getting released in Jan that would be a better option for futureproof

I would have gone 920 over the 860 if I had more extra cash. A motherboard with similar features to a similarly spec'd P55 mobo would have cost me 50% more. At the time I didn't deem this extra expense worth it.

However to be honest, I really doubt I'd notice any performance difference from the lack of triple channel memory. I don't regret my decision what so ever. It does hurt my crossfire potential in future though.

Don't worry, you wont feel the lack of triple channel memory at all. I have a I7 950 but i have experince a few P55 systems lately and a i have found that the better Turbo from I7 860 boost better performance then my I7 950 in real applications/multimedia and games.

If you go bench, use real pro applications (some) or use multi-GPUs then I7 9## is better.

1366, More futureproof...

Well.... Seems that Intel has other plans for 1366 skt -> Workstations/Server or Extreme Desktops (EE).... And that means more Cash $$$$, so you better have a futureproof wallet also. :p:

I'd go for the 920. Even though you might get a bad batch (like me - 4.2 @ 1.31 load), you still get a decent overclock.

If you get a great batch, 4.4 with water is doable.

If I were you,I wouldn't buy a Gtx285.I'd buy a Hd5850 or wait for Fermi.

For daily non OC user or mild OC with Turbo Boost ON... I vote i7 860, the beefed up turbo helps a lot. But if you plan to OC your rig, get 920. Hmm i7 860 a little sucks at that point... GTX285? A bit outdated I think. 5850 can surpass 285 performance. It's the best price/performance graphic card I know for now.

It depends for what purpose the rig is built. If you are not going to gain income by using it, go for the cheapest solution.
If it's going to be used for games, even cheaper i5 might not be a bad idea, although I do not like some aspects which come
together with P55. It just seems like it is not designed to last on the market, imo.

I was confident to go after P55, but then again I gained some cash and now seriously considering going after X58 after all :D

It depends for what purpose the rig is built.

I think everything starts here ... Difficult to give an objective answer without some details about expectations...
