The SSD market is in a continuous climb in the last and SSD's are selling like never before. Kingston has a large variety of models to choose from in a wide range of prices. In today's review we will have a look at the entire portofolio, including the new Kingston SSDNow V 40GB Boot Drive single and RAID 0 configuration.

Because Kingston SSDNow serie doesn't include any Indilinx drive, I will throw in the test a Team Xtreem G1 just for the comparing the results of different SSD controllers"

Ya the new 40GB one is sold out pretty much everywhere in the netherlands because its supposed to be a relabled 40GB Intel SSD.

The Kingston prices are also very attractive even if some of the models cant keep up with the Intels and OCZ Vertex.

Are these rebadged Intel G1 or G2s? (34nm ones or the older ones with **** up support)

some of them are...

Kingston SSDNow M -> Intel X25-M (G1 & G2)
Kingston SSDNow E -> Intel X25-E
Kingston SSDNow V 40GB -> Intel X25-M G2
Kingston SSDNow V 64gb/128gb -> JMicron JMF602 + Toshiba MLC + anti-stutering firmware
Kingston SSDNow V+ 64gb/128gb/256gb -> Samsung controller + Samsung MLC

They dont have Trim support yet but Kingston says to be working on it.
And if it takes them to long you can flash the Intel firmware into the Intel rebadged ones.

Nice one, thanks for that :)
Two 40gb looks really tempting..

I would assume these two are the same, just the bundle that's different?
SNV125-S2BD/40GB
SNV125-S2/40GB

I think the two you're referring to are the bare drive and the desktop kit which has a mounting adapter.

Yes, don_xvi is right ;)

Starscream, I flashed the SSDNow M 80 Gen 2 with Intel firmware and it workes flawless, with TRIM and all. Kingston recomends that you do so because the SSD is seen by the system as Intel, so it has Intel firmware from the factory :). The SSDNow V 40GB it has modified Intel firmware so no TRIM yet but Kingston said that it's working on it ;)

Hmm $120cnd for a 40... sorely tempting. I may just attempt to get my hands on one of these in the near future to play around with. More than enough room for windows itself and a couple games, still would have the raptor for anything sizeable regardless.

Kingstons are good, especially in RAID-0

hopefully this ain't like Intel's SSD...so buggy and require to patch and upgrade firmware once in every 2 months or so...

With TRIM enabled you don't have to do anything, just enjoy the speed :D

Like to any other hdd... it blows them away. The only thing that would be better is sata3 SSD, and that is what Micron is releasing to the market. :)

Nice choice Marc ;)! Will be happy with the little 40Gb drive, but isn't that too small for a laptop?

Blow them out of the water:D

With SSD you won't notice a difference with all ridicolous high numbers you are seeing everywhere - Access Time is what makes the SSD's pure sex

It is good only when in RAID, but then it is better to buy intel 80gb g2, same price plus intel one have TRIM. But for laptops it is good buy...

matose
12-13-2009, 08:45 AM
The 40GB will have TRIM too in a couple of weeks ;)! Because it's Intel based, Kingston only got to modify the Intel 02HD firmware for it and it's done...

Yeah but TRIM don't work still with RAID so intel 80gb is still better buy IMO. But for standalone 40gb kingstone is very good for laptops which have options for 2 disks.

I put an 80GB G2 in my AS1410 notebook, plenty of space for an ultraportable. Once I get a bus-powered 2.5" enclosure I'll have all the storage I need after putting the stock HDD in it.

I've recently stumbled upon A-DATA's x25-m line, so I was wondering if anyone knows whether they're G1 or G2 and if it would be possible to flash them with Intel's firrmware...
