If I had to choose an upgrade ? Which one: 2K or XP? I see their about the same price!

Honestly, the only crashes I have, are the ones I bring on myself with outrageous settings! I do realize it's time to upgrade though!:)

I haven't been too keen on MS operating systems for sometime but I have to say at this time for all around general usage, XP is very good. If Linux could ever get the Hardware support that MS gets from the MFG's then I would vote Linux (Mandrake or RedHat) hands down.

I've been running XP and it works fine. Everyone says 2k is so great, but I tried it a while back... and I lost like 2000 3dmarks from Win98... I don't know if I was using Pro or if they updated it or what. I may pick up a copy of 2k pro and try it out with my new system... Perhaps compare it to 98SE and WinXP and see what I get the best performance with.

I have used Win95, 98, 98B, Millinium (although only for an hour), and XP-Pro. XP-Pro is as stable an OS Bill has put out IMO. I never tried 2000 but have heard it is stable as well.

yes ! I didn't like XP from the start, there was like ... nothing new ... and i was perfect happy with 2K

I'm gonna say Win XP Pro. It's the first windows OS I haven't really had many problems with. Only prob so far has been Intel Speedstep, my laptop and win xp working properly together, but I got it sorted out somewhat now. The stability on it is just amazing compared to older Windoze versions.

Linux - Gentoo is the distro of choice by all of the geeks that I know use linux.
MS - Well, I hate Microsoft, but if I had to choose, then I'd pick win2k since that is the one I use.

I'm using Win2K server for my main server, and XP for my notebook and client machines. Although I love tweaking software, I've had better luck finding 'off-the-shelf' solutions for the Windows platforms than for Linux.

I've been away from linux for a few years though, and I'm finally going to spend some time working with it as a backend server again. But I somehow think the majority of the systems will be XP for the forseeable future.

I use Windows 2k Pro at home and on all of my computers at work as well. It seems to work great for us especially now that I can actually get some work done rather than troubleshoot computer problems all damn day. I would like to check out XP though!! From what I hear, its a great OS, but I'm just not too sure about the inerface yet. I guess you could always change it back to Windows classic interface though right?
By the way, if any of you run Autocad as well, 2kPro is definitely the best OS....so far.

Yes you can make XP look like WinCLASSIC. But as for using progs like Autocad - XP feels better.

I've got limited experience with XP so far, and the experience I do have w/ it has not been very positive. I can't stand how the interface is, and all those bells and whistles make me feel like I'm in a fisher price studio or something. I'm definitely all for win2k pro, straight forward and no nonsense (of course then again, I don't have neon lights and little fuzzy balls hanging off my vehicles, and my pants are up around my waist and not around my ankles waiting for Bubba the celestial jailmate either;) )j/k

Redmond - Win2k, no activation woes. FAT32 as well, I seem to have a knack for severely corrupting NTFS.

Open Source - Any BSD or Linux distribution, haven't yet found one that stunk.

SunOS for SPARC, Solaris is bloated and SysV based - though for heavy database Solaris is the only way to go in 'NIX.

No questions asked, shirt-friendly with decent support for DB - Big HP UNIX boxen, HP/UX and Oracle.

MainFrame - IBM iron running MVS/IMS. Hard to code but runs like forever.

Mini-Mainframe - either System 88 or OSX1100 (Unisys).

Reliable, bullet-proof small business DB server - RS6000/AIX/Oracle. Always dull for the admin, never a crisis.

I'm still confused...I'm using windows 2k pro. All well and good...if i had an AMD, but i've heard it's XP for Intel proccys? I'm not too keen on XP, so would a tweaked 2k3 edition work best for me?. Also XP and 2k3 have proper HT support, from tests, i suffer quite badly with HT enabled. 3dMark03 goes down a good 1000 marks and stuff like that. Generally 2k pro isn't that great with hyperthreading...

The best Windows OS has to be Windows2k Pro. Win2k3 is also good, but unless you only want to eval it, you gotta shell out a few thousand for something which can be beaten in it's own field (server'ing) by free software (Almost any Unix or Linux flavour). Anyway, my overall favorite OS is Debian Linux, followed closely by FreeBSD 5.x, then followed by FreeBSD 4.x and following that are more BSD and Linux flavours. I just love Debian, it is a non-noobish OS at heart, but even noobs can use it safely if they try. FreeBSD is a bugger to configure, since X almost never works if you use the X config in the installer. I always configure manually anyway. It's an interesting experience, certainly most different to Linux, but it is still great if you have enough time on your hands to configure stuff.

I run xp pro, solaris, freebsd, and gentoo on one computer :D

then i run 2k3 Enterprise Server on my media center pc (and use it as a domain controller, dns, vpn, etc)...

i really think solaris is the best. it's got some elements that are overly complicated (like state database replication), but overall solaris is intuitive enough to be usable for most people with a working knowledge of unix, and it has some of the most impressive supporting software available (although the selection is limited compared to linux-based systems)...

I voted for win xp pro. It's the one I know best (as it's survived for over 5 years now - I don't think that's ever happened in MS history before? Maybe Win3.11)

The beta I've been playing with for Vista seems pretty good, no huge upgrades and too many user sacrifices in the name of "security" but it will have DX10 and Aero glass...

i like all the old oses because i'm cheap, and 3.11 will run on most of my pcs, hell i have a 386 sx 25 mhz that wont run 3.11 for some reason, DOS shuld be on the list all the good games were there [tombraider for one] and none of the fancy graphics that make me poo myself when a monster jumps out

woah, i started to ramble there

Somebody of you tryed to run Borland Delphi or C++ Builder on Vista?
Programmers wont use Vista until its kernel will support Borland's compilers.
Strategy is like this: Buy Vista for 100$ then buy MS soft for ~5k $. This really sux :slapass:

Of course most of the ppl are not programmers and Vista will be successful but I just wanted to say that Vista is not perfect and its all about money like always.

i've always had good luck with win xp, I've had problems, but none that would make me abandon it for something else.

Ive used 98, 98se & 2kpro... Played with XP. So far, hands down, 2k pro all the way... no doubts about it...

Even today 2 years up time with zero error only restart(s) where do to routine maintenance and cooling system cleaning and or updates. (Or moving I would have run it on the UPS if it where big enough :D)

Win2K Pro all the way and forever (Xp sucks theroughly and with the crap they put in SP2 and the New vista I definatly will not be upgrading)

Well wouldn't know where to start!

Which is the best OS for what? :D

If we are talking gaming/ease of use, It'd be some Wintendo version

If we are talking security/stability/server/coding machine/networking/etc it would be Linux and some BSD flavour depending on preference :)

The way the original question is put, it is a bit vague :)

PS: No prizes for those who have guessed what I've voted on :p:

XP Pro, but Linux is getting better. I think in another couple years it might be a viable alternative.

I use 2k pro. I slipstreamed USP 5 into it. Upgraded the explorer and shell with xp icons. Used HFSLIP an Nlite on it. I have a very stable and very secure iso of around 85 mb. Install size is about 150 mb and uses 29 mb on comitt after tweaking the services.
I am sure others have done better but mine is nice :)

XP Pro Sp2 has been the best for me as far as Desktop is concerned but I've also been using Server 2003 SP1 and that is so stable, pity it requires a lot of resources to run smoothly.

I haven't used any other OS yet than MS so for me it's Win XP SP2. I don't remember having any serious trouble with it.
