Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I would like to hear from everyone else who did the same. I recieved my HD 5870 2 weeks ago and decided to replace the thermal paste with some AS5. I removed the cooler, then the paste from the gpu and cooler, then i saw what the base of the cooler looked like. I think ati just machined off a piece of copper and stuck it on. I am going to lap it today and see what happens. I wil also post before and after photos

Please, keep us informed. I have the same problem. The cooler base is pretty hard to lap, because of soldered bolt-through parts.

I saw the same thing on some 5970 review, the heatsink base looked like c.r.a.p! But maybe that is due to card being a sample straight from AMD.

I am finished with it, I need to make the pictures smaller to upload. Idle temps went down 2degrees, max temps went down 8degrees. I am verry happy with that. The card now does not go over 70 in games

Was this with or without new TIM?

Even before I did the lap I could go to 1050 core and 1300 mem, my temps ar just a lot better now. I used AS5, so that also helped. Has anyone else maybe tried it, and what was your results. On a side note, I am very impressed with this card's performance

I did some lapping myself and here are the pictures:

First thing I noticed is that temp difference between GPU Temp. 1, 2 and 3 from GPU-Z readings (Crysis - Lost Paradise) went down : from max 12 to max 6.5 degrees Celsius.
