How do the two compare, excluding price? For games such as FSX, Armed Assault, any games pretty much.

There are plenty of reviews comparing the two. In a nutshell however, the 295 pulls ahead more than not although at the cost of increased power consumption, noise level and weaker feature support.

If you can get a steal of a deal on a 295 and you are not concerned with DX11, then they'd still be a good choice.

Like Chickenfeed said, the GTX 295 still outperform the HD5870 in most games so it just comes down to the price. I would say if you can find the GTX 295 for $350 or less then go for it, plus the HD5870 is extremely hard to get anyway.

i own 2 of both, the gtx 295 still out performs the 5870 in just about everything I play. if u can find a 5870 buy it however. but as others said, dont hesitate on a $300-$350 gtx 295. i game with my 295's and bench with 5870's. I have 2 5850's on the way from the egg so I can let u know how they fare too if you want

Wow, wasn't expecting the gtx295 to pull ahead. I don't know if I can find anything in the $400 price range.

I love my Gtx 295, and i was able to get one for 400$ a little while ago, but with the release of the 5870 you can probably get one for about 300-350... dont hesitate to grab one, still an absolutely beautiful card!!

5870 would be my pick..single gpu lower power consumption and on par performance...which might pick up with the release of newer drivers...also the 5870 overclocks very very well..havent seen benches from 1000mhz core 5870's but id imagine it pull a head of the 295(given you can overclock both cards but the single gpu would probably be a little more worthy imo)

not to mention the heavy feature set with the 5 series..definitely a better buy unless you can find a cheap 295 like some have mentioned..

I wouldn't compare a 295 to a 5870 on current DX builds. We won't know for sure how the two compare until the DX11 games come out. DX11 is not only going to offer more rendering features, the GPU will be able to handle multithreading, so the results could be quite different once games start making use of that. AS ATI stated in their DX11 demo, GPUs for some time have been starved for data. DX11 will change that.

Try Craigslist, I saw an ad here that sell a GTX 295 for $340 OBO. But if you think about getting one of those card then you might wait for the HD5970 (dual GPU) that coming out this week.

A 5870 is the better buy considering it will likely perform better in upcoming titles that use DX11. Look at these STALKER benches:

A 10 FPS increase in average and minimum framerate is quite significant. In older titles the 295 will edge past the 5870, but honestly, does that ever matter? It's not like there's any cases where a game is not playable on the 5870 and playable on the 295.

if price is no concern xfire runs on any board :) both cards are surprisingly hard to get though

the 295 is easy to get but at if you dont mind waiting i would go for the 5870. Like most have said it will run cooler, take less power, OCs well, and will run DX11 for you when the time comes
