i feel really stupid right now asking this question but i don't know how to clock the gtx280 under win7. i have been an ati user for the last few years.

rivatuner doesn't show the clock panel and the sliders in atitool and evga precision do nothing. so how how does this work? :D

i've tried evga precision under xp and it works but when i clock the gpu too high the card will do a reset where the screen freezes for a couple of seconds. after that the sliders also don't change anything.

is it possible to get them working again without restarting the computer?

You cant OC really high with EVGA precision. You also have too incrase the volts. This is mostly done by flashing the GPU bios ...

I can do 745mhz on the MAX bios vols of 1.26v with my GTX285 ( dont know very well about GTX280 ). The Vreg wont give higehr then this without mod. If you dont touch to volts your most likely at 1.15v and wont be able to go very high. 700-710 but i dont really think you can break into the 700 without flashing the bios.

GTX 285 does not have a PWM (pulse width modulation). The 280 does.

OP your problem is steaming from the nvidia drivers you are using not win 7.
There are two different fixs for this. The first is use driver ver. # 186.18 uninstall then reinstall precision.

Or you can use reg hack work around. Open regedit click find next in the top tabs.
Type exactly " RmThermalProviderInfo " delete all of these there are 3 of them
Same thing " RmThermalProviderNum " delete all of these. Reboot.

This will clear out the false numbers. It should back to normal.

you can always volt mod and use riva tuner /msi afterburner or evga precision as i do...i dont see any reason why

+1 andress !

Without volts mod, highest you can go is 725-750 depand on the luck you had on the chip your card have !

Factory OCed one seems to be good binned chip, so my guess is that a OC2 BFG card will OC higher vs a Standard BFG card.
Its a guess, but i really think that companies use the best binned GPU for the OC version .. its just pure logic !
748mhz on the GPU is still a whole 100mhz overclock ! ( near 20% for a gtx285 from stock 648mhz. )
Volts mod can lead over 800mhz without issue with good cooling. But you need to MOD the card .. electrically ( soldering etc )

yes i love moding but those clocks are not bench it can go higher...thats what i love about vmods...and im at a simple single loop water, 3 fan rad nothing fancy.
did you try the vid mods posted from Cryptik & NapalmV5 ?

Cheers mate

Now that is a great overclock! And due respect +1

The point is you don't have to volt mod a 280. It has a digital pwm, that is programmable with software. Hence evga's volt tuner.

fact is you will never see a 280 clocked as high as "andressergio"

In the end I'm sure a hardwired volt mod is better. I'm almost certain it voids the warranty, right?

yes i know mate i have to do it the hard way as i cant use evga volt tuner or other soft...i never had a VGA that i can pump more vgpu or vdimm through soft so i dont know but i do know how hard mods perform as i took some amazing clocks from my 8800GTX my 8800ULTRA and now for the GTX285

Yes i think it voids it but if soldering is good maybe they dont even notice :D

try using MSI Afterburner
terrific software
volt slider might not work but MHz should be fine

you can set profile to load at startup

The software voltage contol in afterburner evga or rivatuner will only work if your card has volterra digital voltage regulators. In other words a reference design 280/260gtx(192 shader model) or some specific 55nm models like the MSI lightning.

There is a thread in the MSI afterburner forum that lists the supported cards.
