Ok, so with all the buzz around these fans, I have been looking around for alternatives to these fans that would be comparable for a TFC 480.

Being a college student with less than desirable funds, I can't spring for 14 bucks a fan, so what would you guys suggest as a holdover that would perform comparably on the TFC 480?

Thanks!

Yates if you're comfortable with their sleeve-bearing'd nature.

Anything comparable is going cost about as much if not more. GTs are very competitively priced for the kind of reliability (don't think anyone's hit their MTBF yet) and performance characteristics they provide.

there is no fan like a GT, period.

Considering durability, you probably end up cheaper buying GTs anyway. A lower quality fan needs to be replaced 2 if not 3 times to match the life expectancy of a GT, while providing a worse performance/noise ratio.
I'm having a hard time understanding why someone on a budged would buy a TFC rad tho.

Try the Zalman ZM-F3 fans, you can find'em for less than 10$ per fan.

Amazing performance and low noise, Ihave one that rotates at close to 2000 RPM with minimal noise, can't hear it unless I get my ears too close to it like half a foot or something.

The one I have is a blue LED Fan, but the same as the one in this link

2000rpm and no noise? It is your opinion as for example i can hear GTs @ 1000. And I really doubt that they are louder

I didn't say no noise, I said little, and yes you can search for review for this fan, it rotates arround 1800 + 10% RPM according to Zalamn specs.

Hehe, snagged one off eBay when it popped up. Paid 70 shipped for it. :)

What is the static pressure on the zalman like?

These ones from DingDong's build log look interesting. They are OOS at jabtech atm though.

Small update.

I got 3 1150rpm Gentle Typhoons + 3 Thermalright 140mm fans for the case. BOTH fans are completely silent unless I have my ear next to them (kids, don't try at home). Both are amazing fans, the quality of the thermalright's are great! They come pre-sleeved in some OK sleeving and with a black housing.

Thanks to John @ Jab-Tech (http://www.jab-tech.com) for these, there was more in the order like fan pins etc... but you don't need to see them :)

If you are mounting the fans vertical, yates work perfectly fine. Mine have been going strong for over a year without any issues. Horizontally mounted is when sleave bearings like to burn up.

Yates or F3's. Use 9v reducer resistors on the F3's to drop them to 1300-1400rpm.

I like the Noise Blockers for a good cheap fan, and Noctua's NF-P12 for more $

I have 1 NF-P12 and it has a anoying whine/vibration in it, it was in my case for a day and it was driving me insane..
Think i just have a dud but i didnt take the risk to buy more Noctua's.

I have a hard time being willing to spend $15 a fan when no sooner have I bought them it seems that something bigger/better/quieter comes out. It wasn't long ago when the S-Flex fans were all the rage at $15 a pop, then the San Ace fans, I forget what else, now Gentle Typhoons. I've been sticking with yate loons since they are so cheap. Maybe I'll break down and get some Gentle Typhoons since they really seem to offer a noticeable improvement at some point, but it is hard to stomach 6 x $15 just for my rads.

I am a noisefreak and have tried many fans over the past year, such as: Noctua P12, S12, Nexus, Scythe S-Flex, Gentle Typhoon, Slipstream, Noiseblocker and many more and can definetly say that Gentle Typhoon is the clear winner.
In fact, the only other fan I've heard that can even compete with GT is Nexus (aka yate loon). It is a bit louder, but has a very pleasent noise.

So, if you're on a budget then go for yates. Best bang for the buck.
But if you want the best performer you will have to open up your wallet some more, if it's worth it or not is up to you.
For me it is definetly worth it. Low noise, (relativly) good pressure, long mtbf, low power consumption and so on.

Last week i swapped out my 5 Yate Loons (1350rpm) for 5 GT's (1800rpm) and i can't say i regret it. With the fans turned down it's all nice and quite and temps are as good or even better as with the yates turned up halfway or more.

For benching i turn them up all the way and they're about as noisy as the Yates turned up all the way but the GT's are spinning a lot faster!

Two of the Yates have been in use for over 2,5 years without trouble and still ran strong though, one of the newer ones had an annoying ticking sound.

Scythe Kama Flex are the same as S-Flex's, just cheaper ($9 vs $13), which means they got similar performance characteristics and use pretty much the same fluid ball bearing motor (very high reliability).
