Just been in touch with a store a few miles from here which guaranteed they will hide a HD5850 for me to buy since I need it quite urgently for reviews and stuff.

But I wonder if I can buy any HD5850 following the reference design and use a say ASUS HD5850 BIOS to flash it, thus "unlocking" the card so that I can use ASUS VoltageTweaker, or can I simply get whichever card I want and use MSI Afterburner without bothering with BIOS flashing?

Just get any card.
You'll have to flash anyway, though, to remove OC limits.
And just use AfterBurner. It totally owns Asus' utility.

Screw it, I found 1 single card in stock which just happened to be and ASUS. I was quick to click the buy button

Getting that sexy beast out of the postal office tomorrow :hump: This is like twice as much money as I've EVER spent on a silly graphicscard :D
