Ok so i picked up a Marantz SR6003 couple of weekends ago for a good price ($1,500AUD).

Only issue is speakers, i have no clue what is out there, and of course the choices are immense.

I have a budget limit of $2,500AUD for speakers.

Currently im looking at a Jamo S606 HCS6 setup:
http://www.jamo.com/eu-en/products/s-606-hcs-6-description/

They seem to sell for around $1900-$2200, a friend has them and they do sound very clear and crisp. He does not have the sub that goes with the S606 HCS6 kit though, its a smaller Jamo one.

I also have a friend who is a professional car audio installer, so building my own speakers quickly and easily is not out of the question either - if there are some options that will blow things apart compared to off the shelf

One side thought ive had - is it worth going 7.1 or not really?
I know the Marantz will do 7.1.
I do plan of keeping this setup for id imagine the nexy 7 years at a minimum. My last system that cost $1200 back in 1997 has lasted the distance so im expecting much the same from the next cash outlay.

Thanks in advance for any input. Or if there are any good articles people know of that would help make sense of things, also appreciated :)

Jamo makes good stuff, it is made by Klipsch.

What kind of music do you like, do they need to be any certain size?

Well for the sub at least it would probably be worth it to look in to making it yourself. If you can put together a nice sturdy box of a decent size, you might want to get an Exodus Audio driver or two. The Shiva-X is pretty cheap for what it does (original, the X2 is hardly cheaper than the Tempest), or if you need crazy amount of low end that will shake anything down, the Maelstrom might be more up your alley.

As for 7.1, it probably would be worth it especially if you want to keep the setup for a long time. There are even 9.1 and 11.1 setups now, with height speakers and crazy stuff. So 7.1 would be good to at least have the bare minimum surround setup 5 years from now.

It's predominately for movies more than anything else.

Although i do listen to a bit of electronic/trace type stuff, and also a fair bit of metal and anything in between those two opposite's.

Mainly concerned about movies etc.

Ye i was thinking a sub might be a better build item myself, and overall cost wise would go nicely.

I'll have to do some reading on the Sub's area i think.

The Jamo system will work nicely then, they produce a nice wide soundstage and have the bite to belt out the music when needed.

Jamo's matching subwoofer is decent for the price if you are interested, you will need it to get the full audio spectrum for music and movies.

Other systems i can recommend, but i don't know what is available in your area.

Somewhat more of a live concert sound and more "punch" than the Jamo system

Another good option is Boston acoustics, these are great for the price but sound more laid back with a smaller soundstage than the others.

Add sub of your choice.

Infinity has some good budget speakers also, worth a look anyways.

5 good speakers will sound better than 7 cheaper ones if your receiver has that option.

If you build your own sub it might be worth it to see if you can get an Adire Audio XXX for a reasonable price. A single one of those in a 20ft^3 enclosure will produce reference levels down to less than 10hz.. if you've got a decent amp to run it with. Problem is that could eat up your whole budge by itself ;)

There's a really good read out on the web somewhere about it though i've lost the link :(
