OK so I bought this new laptop "Asus G72Gx" and I thought SPDIF was 5.1 optical cable but the laptops SPDIF is round like a headphone jack. I want to run it to my receiver but am very confused is there a cable with the round head phone type jack on one end and a optical on the other??

That is called a Coax SPDIF connector. There are two types of SPDIF used with computers, optical and coax. Your laptop doesn't use optical.

So can my receiver take coax?

you can buy a little converter cost around 1$ that will do RCA -> Toslink S/PDIF optical adaptors http://www.amazon.com/Toslink-To-Optical-Mini-Adapter/dp/B0002MQGRM 1 pinny ^_^
