Has this been done for the 5000 series yet? I've seen pictures of the mod for the 4000 series, but I thought that it wasn't possible for the 5870 because of the design of the cooler? Something about it covering everything, including the GPU, with a single piece of metal.

mhh i cant find it i thought i saw a picture of a 5870 with water block and its heatsink where you could unsrcew the cores cooling block and fit a water block on the core and still have the vrms and gddr cooled but the stock cooler

I don't think that can be done without breaking the cooler and doing some extensive modding. One would have to cut the GPU cooling element (fins & heatpipes) out of the frontplate as they seem to be soldered into the frontplate. I'm not 100% sure on this - but I am pretty sure this is the case.

I know you can use water block for core and stock plate for vrms/memory for 5850. But I believe 5870 has its metal plate + core cooler all attached into 1 unit, so some major cutting would be needed.

all i've heard/seen is speculation on the feasability of this mod. would love some concrete pictures.

I'd love to know if this is possible too, otherwise I may just have to go for a 5850. I have a Thermalright HR 03 GT that I'd love to transfer to a 5850/70. concrete:

Well since Bill picked up three FC blocks for the 5870 earlier at my place, I guess he doesn't need to care any more :ROTF:

I'm sure that while he's dabbling with the blocks he would tear apart one of them 5870 stock coolers and see if the cooling element can be removed from the faceplate...

I just looked at my cooler since I installed the EK block. The original cooper heatpipe block is solder to the original front plate. You would need to unsolder it from the front plate to install a water block or other heatsink.

There are pics somewhere of someone who has done it with a 5850.

how much solder are we talking about here? just the 4 corners? or hard core?

any pics of the aforementioned soldering would be apreciated

5850 w/ mcw60-r2 + stock plate

But the core heat sink isn't attached to stock plate like 5870.

Not sure how much solder, but it does look like a thorough job. Keep in mind if you were to unsolder it, that would void the warranty, even with XFX, so I wouldn't do it if you care about the warranty at all. You would be better off using ram sinks or getting the Swiftech heatink that goes with the MCW60.

swiffy doesn't yet have a sink for the 5870 (though they might by the time i grab one)

i'd probably try snagging a spare stock cooler from someone who went FC water block and whose warranty expired before i tried this. You could also resolder it together yourself. Thanks for the heads up, though.
