Since there is no real thread on this yet, I thought I'd give you all a quick heads-up on what's to come for you crunchers around the world :)

I finally got a Gulftown up and running in my mainrig, replacing the 975 that has gotten unneccessary the moment I stopped running on phase change 24/7.

Unfortunately, Gulftowns aren't really supported by a lot of mobos at the moment, and since there was no way to get it to run on my DFI x58, I had to change mobos. I picked the Rampage II Extreme despite it being Asus, because a friend of mine had very good results overclocking with Gulftowns on it.

Seems I got a dud board though, I cannot seem to breach 213mhz BCLk no matter what, it just won't post. I tried all kinds of settings and voltage ranges as well as different GPUs and ram kits, all to no avail.

So for now, I am stuck @ 4Ghz.. but then again, 4Ghz on a Gulftown ain't nothing ;)

Enough talk, here's some pics for ya all.

Hey, it's Asus, but at least it looks good

http://database.he-computer.de/Bilder/Gulftown/CIMG1680.JPG

Beware.. the allmighty evap! :hrhr:

I might try it under cold these days if I can make the time.

This is how it has been crunching since yesterday, perfectly stable at pretty low volts.

What is really awesome is the power consumption & heat dissipation though - it stays insanely cool, around 50C crunching on all cores crunching
On way-too-hot water (32C) that is amazing - power consumption is equal to an i7 running 4Ghz with 50% moar cores

So brace yourselves people, and save your money - monster crunchers are coming

Try different Back-to-back CAS delay settings , that could be holding you back.

Thanks Jaco, tried that, doesn't help. It's probably a bios issue, I am using an early alpha release bios that won't even allow me to change uncore and QPI mult.

Only if you sign NDAs

Yep, only then. Btw could you run some benchies? Like wPrime?

That's just sweet. I want to see that PPD of this thing!

And maybe talk to the guys in the intel forum (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=232109&page=7), they seem to be getting these to crazy high speeds... (Shark-357 has his at 5062Mhz under water.)

Well, problem is the small multiplier on mine. I could probably get 5Ghz stable, but I'd need another type of chip (3,07Ghz stock CPUs).

What Jaco showed is my 2nd Gulftown, that has been crunching on a GB Extreme mobo for the past 2 weeks. It's currently on Scott's Account, as well as the rest of bob's and my farm. I will provide you with nubers on this one too, but it's looking very promising, like 46k at 4Ghz.

And 4Ghz cruncing can be easily attained even on air :)

Those numbers are huge!

Makes sense when you think about it, 50% more cores, 50% higher output... But still insane!

So if you managed to get that to 5Ghz, that would come out to ~57k from one CPU!

Tried that, believe me.. tried everything, to no avail. It's either a bad board or the buggy alpha bios, hopefully the latter.

GBs can usually do 222Mhz max then hit a wall, mine has funky slowdown issues after 216 specially in 3D. But you may be able to run 220 on a GB w/o mod if you're lucky and have a good one.

thinking if I crank the snot out of my current i7, which burns out first ... the mobo or the chip ... that will help me decide for sure :ROTF:

But if it's the Mobo then you have a perfectly good chip that needs a new motherboard... And a perfectly good rig that needs building!

I will likely only end up with 1 system (by design, not just because I burn somehting out) so it is more like if I burn the mobo then I sell the old CPU and buy new i9 cpu + mobo (hoping they have refreshed X58 by then) or if I burn out the chip I just buy the i9 cpu and see how that does in my existing mobo.

So's Christmas!

Looks very good, though. Can't wait to see some comparison testing with a fully functional board/chip.
