So apparently you can unlock the 5870 Super Sampling features in the cat 9.10 betas and it works on the 4800 series, possibly even earlier series of cards.

So far it only works in OpenGL, more testing is needed.. hopefully ATi will include this feature for all cards in future driver updates.

I get the true SSAA in OpenGL games (HD4850).

How to: Open your regedit and look for /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/Class/{...}/0000 -> ASE_NA. Than change ASE_NA 1 to 0 (and it's better to add ASTT_NA 0) and restart the CCC. So you get a new option:

With 4xSSAA Doom 3 is playable, but 8xSSAA kills the performance.

Location for me was under(win 7)
local_machine/system/controlset0001/control/class/((hex stuff) and look for 1 that says reg_sz display adapters)/0000
Change and add what was said, restart computer and new option appears in ccc.

I made some screen shots in half life, will post later

Said open gl only right now so hl1 was my first thought that I had installed. Originally made this for my self ,but figure I would upload here.

I made the screens at my native res of1680 x 1050. Photobucket seems to converted the .bmp to .jpg.
Under new option set it to either for multi sample for box and super sample for SS. Adaptive AA was set on in CCC. Edit: found out later that day that there 3 options under aa mode, 1 is multi-sample, additive multi sample (additive aa, or transparent aa), and super sampling. So additive aa was off for normal.

Last notes, we can see in cases were it uses transparent in textures that SS really helps out!

Thanks for posting those pics m8, I'm surprised more people arn't jumping on this.. SSAA is back and no one seems to care? maybe the latest gen of gamers are too young to even remember what it is??

It's cool indeed, but nothing spectacular at this time with 58xx on the market.
And the lack of new opengl titles doesnt really help :) But if you happen to play some older games, then it could be pretty helpfull I guess, depending on their AA support.

afaik the 5800 SSAA modes only work in DX9 and OpenGL, i suspect someone will get SSAA working on the 4800's in DX9 aswell.. but OpenGL is a good start :)

Unfortunately, SSAA makes everything turn into blur-o-vision for me right now. Hope it gets fixed.

Yeh you have to use neg lod adjustment in ATiTool or ATiTrayTools..

I think it was -2 for 4xSSAA and -1 for 2xSSAA?

ok hang on it was -1 for 4xSSAA and -2 for 8xSSAA

I've tried running ATItraytools, but it crashes my system with this colored-grid looking thing. I'm new to this ATI stuff (5870 is my first ATI card), any advice on which version to install/how to install it?

I'm running version 1.6.9.1386 of ATiTrayTools (not ATiTool) and it installed and runs fine in Vista.. I think it's a couple versions old?

I would recommend not changing any other 3D settings in ATiTrayTools though as it can cause conflicts if you have CCC installed.. I just use ATT for games profiles, unlocking HQ AF, the "Vista work around" for vsync in certain titles and now neg lod adjustment.. for all global AA and AF settings etc I still use CCC.

Also, just thought I'd mention, that I'm sure ATi driver team will automatically adjust lod when SSAA is applied in future driver revisions, so this is just a temporary fix.. they said they are aware of titles becoming blurry when SSAA is enabled and they are fixing it. I guess by fixing it they mean auto lod adjustment.

Now its not going to say the same hex stuff as mine, but just start at top and go down and look for display adapters under data.
