View Full Version : Heat Killer waterblock differences

I was just sizing up a possible water cooling setup for my rig but stumbled upon something which I found quite strange. Why is the heat killer version 3.0LT cheaper than the regular 3.0 version.

Apart from aesthetics, is there any additional flow differences between or any performance gain from getting the regular 3.0.

I don't believe so. The LT just uses a Derlin (spelling?) top instead of a full copper top. I suppose the heat transfer to the top on the full copper version would result in slightly lower temperatures... but we are talking tenths of degrees C AFAIK.

The cost of copper is the reason for the price difference. Copper is a bit costly atm. The internals on those 2 blocks are exactly the same. There have been tests that show there are fractions of a degree difference between the 2. The main reason to get the copper is to have it nickel plated and have a bling block in your case. If you don't care about bling, the LT is fine.

Ahh thanks for such quick replies guys, i just kept looking all over the web at different sites specs of these two block and I really could not find much info in relation to the price differences but if its the bling and the top copper material then I'd probably give it a miss. The LT looks fine to me, id rather have that than the full copper version imo.

Between those 2, the performance is the same, the only difference is the top. The LC variant, which is cheaper than either of those, has a different base design that is not as effective.

also the plate inside is a bit different i believe there is less surface area as well

The LC's pin matrix is not as dense as the the LT and CU. This offers higher flow rates, but reduces the amount of heat dissipated.

"Not as effective" being 1.3 degrees temp worse and more flow according to Hesmelaugh test (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=224976) results.
