AMD announces Thuban six-core CPUs

AMD's Thuban - likely to be shipped as the Phenom II X6 at retail - is based on the company's server-oriented Opteron chips.
If you've been salivating over the thought of getting your hands on one of AMD's six-core processors but didn't want to spend the extra associated with the company's server-oriented Opteron label, there's good news: enter Thuban.

The guys over at MaximumPC have confirmed with AMD that the six-core technology which has gone into its Opteron server processors is due to hit the mainstream early next year with a consumer-grade chip codenamed Thuban. Interestingly, the processor will be fully backwards compatible with existing AM3 and AM2+ motherboards - although not ones based around the older AM2 standard.

Thuban processors will feature an on-chip DDR2/DDR3 memory controller, and will be fabricated using AMDs current 45nm technology. While official branding for the product has yet to be confirmed, it's thought that Thuban chips will be sold as Phenom II X6 at retail.

While clock speeds are thought to take a hit compared to quad-core parts in order to keep down the TDP, the Thuban chips will have a decent stack of cache memory with 3MB of level 2 in total and 6MB of level 3 unified cache on-board.

why? backwards compatibility with AM2+ boards

Drop in replacement for a Phenom I? How much?

It is a little fuzzy as I was drunk when it was being explained to me but supposedly the memory controller accepts either DDR2 or DDR3 natively and making just a DDR3 memory controller wouldn't yield any benefits in performance versus the profits possible by using a single die for two sockets. I'm sure all those AM2+ guys aren't complaining :)

Nice, Istanbul finally overclockable :D

This looks like a nice alternative to an i9 system.

If it's cheap then yeah, definitely. I9 is a beast tho .

Isn't i9 going to be prohibitively expensive though? Like $999 + for just the chip?

Yeah, but they will also be unlocked and, given the right cooling, probably around as fast as a Dual Istanbul.

Any idea how they'll compare to the Magny-Cores AMD has cooking...? or when they'll be out in comparison?

Well, Magny-Cours will probably go against Westmere-EX which can be seen on the current intel roadmap. Not sure but those may be 32nm 12-core chips. These are not due before Q3 2010 tho, and will only target the server market (same as Magny-Cours). As for Gulftown, well.. release will probably be Q1 2010, but seeing as you can get samples already they are not too far off.

So what I'm seeing for the near future is AMD's Thuban at 6 cores and the Gulftown at 6 cores with HT (so performs like a 10 core? - I know 12 threads, but HT 40% boost?)

Do we have any idea on the pricing points of each?

The thing I really like is that on my two top rigs they'd be drop in replacements I believe... Definate plus.

Magny-Cours is set for Q1 2010,socket g34 - 24 physical cores:

For 6 (x2) cores have a look at this one instead:

cheapest 6 core Istanbul (for the mobo above) is $499 atm
