I'm no electronics buff but I've been wondering if I can buy items like voltage regs with a view to repairing dead cards for folding/grid

Is this a reasonable Idea? where would you advise I shop for parts?

My experience of faults so far is that all my Nvidia failures have been similar so maybe once I find one fault maybe I will find the same on other failed cards

You could check Mouser, Digikey or Newark. I just buy replacement caps though.

Have you tried the oven method?

Digikey, Mouser, Allied Electronics, Arrow, etc.

Most of the parts are removable, but will take some soldering skill to replace anything that has more than a couple leads :)

Around 200°C should be enough.
