ok i have a powercolor 4870 clocks to 850/980 stock cooling and no voltmods.
and my HIS HD4870 with the non stock cooler and it will only go to 809/930 any higher and it artifacts, now i dont get it the HIS is stock pcb with voltera vregs, powercolor has aftermarket with non voltera vregs, why is this happening, does HIS have a bios that dont allow overclocking?? thats ,my only conclusion because it just makes no sense whatsoever

809MHz was as high as I could clock my 4870 when I had one card...I can't believe you were able to get yours to 850 without a voltmod. 800-825 is the average for the 4870 on stock volts. When I went to Crossfire I flashed both BIOSes to 800/975 to ensure both would be clocked at speeds they could handle.

Your pcs is just better than average 4870 (from any AIB), that's all. It's possible you could have two identical brand/make/model cards that overclock differently. Luck of the draw, and individual board/chip characteristics...

Having the volterras is nice for soft voltage control, you def want to keep the core & mem & vregs cooled sufficiently, this will help them clock higher. Bioses sometimes make a difference, but i never understood how that works.... (like when everyone wanted an asus TOP bios for their 4870/x2/4890's).

Good luck!

oh ok thanks guys! i cant figure the whole soft volt mod thing out been trying it for a while it says install the voltmod program into the rivatuner directory but idk what that means and when i finally got one to read my card the voltage does not change

I have a pair of Powercolor 4870's and the highest they clock to 845/900

Most games are fine with the mem overclocked but a couple show artifacts so I leave the mem at default... they have plenty of bandwidth anyway..
