View Full Version : nVidia cannot display 1440x900?

This is one of the most frustrating problems I have ever had.

I have a 19" 1440x900 monitor. I have tried 4 different nVidia cards on this monitor, on three different MBs and two operating systems. My conclusion is that nVidia does not like 1440x900 and I would like to know why.

Instance #1

Old Pentium 4 and old OEM motherboard, using a 7800GS AGP card and WinXP 32. Upon booting, monitor will only display at max 1360x768, without having an option for 1440x900. So I had a black strip at the top and bottom of screen. I had to install nTune and create a custom resolution to force the settings. It finally worked and displayed at 1440x900.

Instance #2

Similar to instance 1 in every way, except using an AMD Phenom II, Gigabyte 790FX-UD4P, and 7900GT. Software was able to force 1440x900.

Instance #3

Foxconn Bloodrage MB, i7, and 9600GT. First tried WinXP 32 before reformat. Boot PC and it takes literally forever to see anything. I thought something was seriously wrong, and after about 4 minutes, it finally got into Windows. Very strange. OK, in Windows, but only 800x600. WTF? Yes, latest nVidia drivers are installed. I revert back to solution #1 from before, to force resolution using nTune. I install nTune, and upon attempting to run, I get an error that nVidia X chip not found and thus the software cannot emulate the card apparently. Software closes and will not run. Swap monitor out for a 1600x1050, PC boots up fast like usual, and displays just fine at full res.

Instance #4

Win 7 64-bit is now installed. Now I try installing nTune, and even swapping out the 9600GT with an 8500 to have one more shot at 1440x900. Of course, this res is not available and my only option is once again to attempt to force res with software. nTune is installed, and now crashes Win7 when attempting to open. Yes, this problem is known about, as I have found other stories on the net about nTune crashing Windows with the BSOD. I even tried using another program which had successfully forced 1440x900 on the old MB, I believe Powerstrip, and it gave the same error about not having a certain nVidia chip found on the MB.

So why can an old OEM MB equivalent to a Dell with Pentium 4 succeed at forcing the cards to run 1440x900, and an AMD board, but a new Bloodrage + PCIe card cannot display that res? This is total crap. Piss on you, nVidia.

nVIDIA Control Panel -> Change Resolution -> Add Resolutions... -> Create custom resolution

Worked just fine for me on:
GeForce 8400GS
GeForce GTX 280

Hah, what a joke.

First off, in Win7 nVidia control panel, there was no "Change Resolution". So I switched to classic view. Upon switching to classic view, the software closed. Now there is no nVidia control panel, instead it's now called "nVidia Monitor". (OK, whatever.) But wait, now the standard "nVidia Monitor" crashes Windows when I run it, instantly. What garbage of software. :ROTF:

I'm reinstalling now.

Edit: Looks like it probably won't matter, have a look at this: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/239826-33-nvidia-monitor-ntune-crashes

Leave it to nVidia for fabulous support of their hardware.

I'm on XP, but it should be working fine on Vista as well.
I might check it out later on in Vista.

OK, you were right on the Change Resolution being there, I reinstalled the software and now the layout is different. I went under Display->Change Resolution.

Unfortunately, the crap software makes me test the resolution instead of forcing it, and the test immediately says failed and that my monitor does not support 1440x900.

make sure the resolution is @ 60Hz refresh.

I've tried all Hz ranges.

What is so awkward about 1440x900 that it is not a "regular" resolution to choose from?

I've never seen that resolution as an option with any nvidia card i've had. Though i havn't bought any new ones within the past 4 years :( so maybe thats why? We use an ATI FireGL 8600 on the workstation and I don't think that one even has that option either.

I don't see why you're having issues with that res. My home computer has a 19" wide @ 1440x900 and I have no issues. Running Vista x64, dual GTX8800s in SLI on an EVGA nForce 790i Ultra mobo. Even when I was running 32-bit it still had no issues. 1440x900 is one of the supported options for me. Sounds like your issue is with something other than just the vid card.

idk, there arent that many common resolutions, im surprised both nvidia and ati dont have all common resolutions in their res bar...
but like bill said, adding a custom res isnt such a big deal, at least it never was for me... so its not that bad...

@billdavis: Well, three of the times he tried running it was under XP.

@saaya: They do actually have that res available in the res bar... it's just that if the detected monitor doesn't support that mode, then they hide it.

On that note, I hate to have to ask this (although I doubt I'll get a response considering he hasn't posted in this thread in a week), are your sure that your monitor is 1440x900? If it isn't a 19" wide, then it won't work. I only ask cause I've never heard of common res that are supported by the monitor not showing up in the default options. I don't know if you had bought a standard size screen and saw the res numbers on other wides not realizing they were wide? I'm merely asking out of curiosity, not to be critical or mean or anything....

Another thought too as I look around online, is it a true 19", or is it a 18.5"? I'm just thinking about the maximum res you've been able to do without forcing it (1360x768) and the only monitors that have that as a max res are the 18.5s....

he has a 18.5" 'viewable' 1360x768, and when he forces a custom res at 1440x900 its gonna look wierd, i have 3 19" monitors here, all run fine in win 7, all running at 1440x900 default.

Sorry about the late response, been a bit busy.

Yes the monitor is surely 1440x900, it says so right on the front of the box.

I just purchased a 25.5" 1920x1200 monitor, and a 5870 which arrived today. So all problems are cured. :)
