AMD’s processor code-named Thuban is the company’s first desktop processor with six processing engines. The microprocessors will be compatible with socket AM3 infrastructure and will have integrated dual-channel PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333MHz) memory controller. It is very likely that Thuban processors will retain AMD Phenom II brand name as well as design of the code-named Istanbul chips for servers, thus, will feature 3MB L2 cache (512KB per core) and 6MB of L3 cache. The chips will be made using 45nm SOI fabrication process.

Thuban is a star in the constellation of Draco and it also means “dragon” in Arabian language. The new six-core chip should be compatible with existing AM3 infrastructure (and, quite possibly, even with AM2+ infrastructure with split power plane), it remains to be seen whether Thuban becomes a part of AMD’s current high-end desktop platform called Dragon, or will power the company’s next-generation Leo platform.

If they can deliver a 2.6Ghz sixsy for less than $300 I'm in.

I'm pretty sure socket G32 was mentioned for leo.
I'm just wonder the TDP here for 2.6ghz 125 watts....? just a guess but where right back to phenom Tdp and clocks then lol.
where ever happened to those HT3.1 mother boards >_>

Istambul 2.8Ghz 105w/125w ACP/TDP.

G34 is for 8-12cores dual-die (Opteron 4000 series)
C32 4-6 cores (Opteron 6000 series)

oh I was going by newegg here but I just noticed it says APC 75 watts for 2.6ghz and TDP 115 watts.

Don't know why AMD is taking their sweet time to release an X6 part to the market. It'll be a hit with the kids and possibly give us benchers a reason to get excited again. 6 cores versus 8 threads in Vantage? Sounds like fun to me :)

yes, i want it :). But with AIR OC only, maybe try destroy my x4 955 then :-D (my first LN2?:) )

Plenty of Socket F Istanbul chips on the market

no no no. Leo will be AM3. C32 has a six-core DDR3 CPU already it's called Lisbon.

AMD won't change desktop socket untill Bulldozer arrives.

Thuban is star in Dragon system, but then....its at Dragon platform or Leo platform?

Sounds nice, though it would be great if AMD released this on 32nm like Intel.

They need a "this year" launch of something like this. I would like to add one to my CPU collection. Myabe they have been binning x6's that OC well for BE chips before they release. I wish I worked for AMD...:p:

I'm guessing it is about $350 when it hit the market, around $100 more expensive than 965BE

I believe if it will be released next year, it will under Leo platform, along with new chipset (89x something I believe) and a new GFX (HD5000) too bad it isn't on 32nm

yeah, but that release date makes you wonder what is different. Maybe 32nm ahead of schedule?, Improved features?, something has to be different, otherwise a "this year" or 1Q 2010 release would make much more sense. If no improvements, by that time, the chip could not sell for that much. To much compitition will be floating around. Know what I mean? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but then again, AMD hasn't made a lot of sense to me for a while, they just keep throwing out suprises.... I still haven't had a need to jump to Intel yet.

I agree on that. AMD has been throwing out suprises lately....

or maybe, AMD wants to launch these chips before Intel releasing its six core quad (12 thread) gulftown?

we cant speculate on AMD now...it's been sneaky lately. and thats why I like this company lol

True, I wonder tho, think about it, if I was AMD, why would I say I am releasing a chip before my compition? So they can pre release thier's? I just hope for something new and will upgrade as needed. Who knows what will happen any ways.

They are not releasing the chip on the desktop platform simply because they do not want to devalue the server platform , server 2.6GHz chip is cool grand on the egg right now , nobody in the right mind would pay that much for a desktop chip .

they are always higher in the server side. It is a 2 socket chip. The desktop would be a single socket chip.

I posted a link while back in a thread it said they were delayed. Likely won't come out until new chipset is all polished.

well then I'm hoping to have an IGP that's as fast as 3870 by then lol
