a friend of mine is buying a new vid card soon and needs some help choosing.
he can get the 275 from Fry's for $150 after rebate, or the 4890 for $200 at newegg. is the 4890 worth the extra cash or no?

They're both good cards and compete each other, I would say go with the cheaper. The HD4890 is a nice card for OC but you can't go wrong with the GTX 275 for $150 either.

thats a good deal for the 275 @ $150. the 4890 is a faster card though so if those 275 $150 275 are sold out then that 4890 is the card to get. and unless this is a mandatory buy the dx11 stuff is out soon

High Jacking thread though my question is also in line with the OPs thread...

Would 2x 275GTX`s be faster than 2x 4890s SLI as apposed to Crossfire.

what would win.

2x 4890 will take 2x285 once both are oced by a good margin and 1 4890 will take 1 285 when both are oced

4890 imo .. but I'd just get a cheap card, like the 4850 512 to hold you off till the next gen comes out .. should be here in a few weeks, even if you can't afford the next gen, I'm sure the current gen will drop a little anyways.

Both are great cards, I'd probably go for the cheaper for him.

Eh? You gotta be kidding me.. :shakes:

I'd like to see an HD 4890 take on a GTX 285 oced to 756/1620/1455 :p:

Yeah, thats not a fair comparison, the 4890 is < GTX 285 IMO.

the 275's ended up being out of stock... so i guess 4890 it is. are there any rumors of how much the 5870 will cost?

how do you think a 5870 will compare to a 4890 @ 1ghz core?

A $199 4890 is a lot of power for the price.

Remember though, that the tenative price for Cypress (RV870) starts at $299, which is a whole 50% more expensive than the 4890 meaning that in order to match the 4890's price/performance crown, it will have to be 50% faster than the HD 4890, which is quite a tall order considering how fast the 4890 already is, especially with the new Catalyst drivers:

That's 85 FPS Average on L4D at 1920x1080 8xAA 16xAF ... for $199 0_o

good point perkam...

do you think the 48xx series will drop in price some more when the 5xxx's come out? if so do you think the price drop would be worth the wait?

To me, saving a few $s at Fry's is not worth the risk. Too many times I've ended up with defective/DOA products or something already on a recall list
I returned a Vcard because of recall and they put another price tag on it right there in front of me.

4890 is faster, they only test single card but xfire scales better than sli

frys takes anything back if u have a problem, and when buying just look for the sticker from the manufacture on the sides sealing it

Dude, driverheaven is known to be biased to ATI for a long time now... :p:

Check out this review from hardwarecanucks (http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/18549-ati-radeon-hd-4890-roundup-asus-diamond-his-sapphire-xfx-2.html) in which they compare multiple HD 4890s against an EVGA GTX 275 FTW and a stock clocked GTX 285.

The Sapphire HD 4890 Atomic edition pulls even with a stock GTX 285 in most instances except at very high resolutions, which is about where I'd expect it to be, and falls slightly behind the GTX 275 FTW overall, except in those games that favor ATI..

It's definitely not faster than an overclocked GTX 285 though

As for Xfire vs SLI, thats debateable as well..

the canuks show a clear ati win across the board, and DH benched some different games. also DH has historically been pro ati but they also have a history of having legit benches
