When I move anything around on the screen (say dragging the Firefox window around) one of my two 285's or both of them make a buzzing/clicking noise.

It doesn't really bother me as I doubt anyone will be able to hear it when their in a case but I don't want anything to burn out. Is this something that others have experienced? Should I be worried?

*Just wanted to make a quick note. It is just one of the two cards doing it. Its the main card that I have the monitor plugged into.

Buzzing, squealing - these are all common with graphics cards, particularly nVidia cards. Clicking noises I haven't personally come across, but I imagine that it's caused by the same thing, in which case, it's nothing to worry about. Irritating, and some folks RMA cards due to it, but your cards aren't about to die.

Heh SC always quick to provide the info! Thanks!

That makes me feel a lot better about it. I doubt I'll RMA them as it was hard to find the original version of the GTX 285's and I'm sure if they need to replace it I'll probably end up with a v2.

They just changed the components and layout a bit. From what I've heard they used cheaper parts on the v2 to lower production costs.

I had the same thing with a Diamond 4890. When I would scroll in the web browser I got a squeel. I changed to a GTX 295 CO-OP and I don't have the squeeling anymore. Each card will vary. So unless you're content with the noise, return the card and get another one. IMO.

yeah mine also does this sometimes, will they replace the card for such a thing?

Generally, yes. You may get mucked about with the video card OEM blaming your PSU (and to be fair, poor power regulation can definitely exacerbate any problems), so make sure to let them know that the card exhibits the same behaviour on another system.

Very high frame rates gives more buzzing, but using V-sync resolves partially this problem.

I tested a GTX 285 and certain games (Oblivion) and vsync off generates very noise on menus.

Crysis is the game that makes the most noise so far and its worst in menus... I do have all the video settings to max though. Should I be worried that the only card making noise is the one with the monitor plugged in? Could that be a possible SLI problem?

So how might one ascertain whether one's card is of the v2 revision?

I cant really post a link to the forum this is from but here's a quote. The info is from a few months back. I'm not taking any credit for any of this information and won't claim its dead accurate. I just used it when shopping for my cards and it helped me out so I'm passing it on.

The GTX285 PCB was changed in Mid-April by Nvidia. The NEW PCB has a new layout and downgraded components to lower the cost for Nvidia partners. NO EXISTING FULL COVER BLOCKS WILL FIT ON THE NEW PCB...

Contrary to URBAN LEGEND, the NEW eVGA FTW (w/backplate) is the NEW PCB and will NOT fit currently available full-cover waterblocks.

I can only confirm that one Etailer is shipping the TRUE OLD PART #, that is AMAZON. As I have ordered (2) GTX285's from the this past week and received the OLD PART #.

Here is what you want to order from Amazon...EVGA 01G-P3-1281-AR GeForce GTX285 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PLSCOY/ref=ox_ya_oh_product)

I see that Amazon has raised the price by $40 since last weekend... Maybe they realize they are the only one's who are TRULY stocking the old part number...

**DO NOT BUY THIS CARD FROM NEWEGG** Recertified: EVGA 01G-P3-1281-RX GeForce GTX 285 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130488)

People are claiming that Newegg is selling the old part #, but shipping the new PCB cards...

I would also be very careful of buying from ZipZoomFly, as they have a NO RETURN/NO REFUND policy regarding this part# eVGA card...

People have been reporting that they ordered they OLD PART# card. The warranty sticker even had the OLD PART# on it, When they opened the box and looked at the back of the card, they found another part# sticker on the back of the card denoting the NEW PART#. I found that if you can not see the BIOS sticker to the immediate left of the warranty sticker, then you have been duped into buying the new part# card...

THESE eVGA PART #'S WILL NOT WORK WITH CURRENT WATERBLOCKS

- EVGA 01G-P3-1180-AR GeForce GTX 285
- EVGA 01G-P3-1181-AR GeForce GTX 285 SuperClocked
- EVGA 01G-P3-1287-ER GeForce GTX 285 SSC (Super Super Clocked) Edition
- EVGA 01G-P3-1182-AR GeForce GTX 285 FTW with EVGA Backplate
- EVGA 02G-P3-1185-AR GeForce GTX 285 2GB
- EVGA 01G-P3-1186-AR GeForce GTX 285 2 GB SuperClocked
- EVGA 02G-P3-1187-AR GeForce GTX 285 2GB FTW

Here is how you can tell if you have the REAL EVGA 01G-P3-1281-AR GeForce GTX285. It is as simple as looking through the window on the back of the box.

What you are looking for is the BIOS sticker to the left of the Warranty Sticker on the card, which I've circled in RED...

CORRECT PART# GTX285 - - (Which I purchased from AMAZON on 3/16/09)

No problem. The water block info is a bit out of date from the post I quoted. As of now I know that at least EK has the rev2 full block released.
