Hi all am using Tj07 case rampage extreme board qx9770 ocz ssd I have room for 2x black ice gt extreme 360 1x black ice gt extreme 240 with
some noctua fans.Would liked to have used some uv fans but not sure if good quality uv s exist if they do can anyone suggest a better radiator fan combination thanks.

I would go with a MCR320 and MCR220 with some Gentle Typhoons instead. The LED fans have worn off on me. I don't like how you can't shut the light off if you want to. Cold cathodes are better because of that.

Those rads would require some high speed fans to perform well. This means extra noise.

I think your right about the led thing have also been told to use nf p12 noctuas to keep noise down.

+1

talk about a niche product... Swiftech's MCR series rads pretty much found the sweetspot between High FPI design rads such as HWLabs and Low FPI and THICK rads such as Thermochills...
the MCR320, despite it's size, performs very close with the big boys... and what makes it even better? price...

the HWLabs rads will require some high RPM fans for them to really shine and perform...

if you're set on thick rads, you can actually squeeze a RX480 AND RX240 in the lower chamber of the TJ07... of course, pending size of your PSU...

kinghong1970

those noctuas don't pair up nicely against HWLabs rads...

nutter00

have actualy got quite a bit of room in the lower chambers as ive spent all day resoldering tha galaxy psu to be used outside the case, also am using ssd velcroved beside main board so have room to fit up to 300mm rad where drive bays would have been

Could stuff a monsta down there if you are externally mounting the PSU.

aaah... you're a prime candidate for some Medium Yates with Low FPI design rads... Thermochills, XSPC RX's, Fesers,...

millertime359
08-08-2009, 12:05 PM
Ok then, you said you wanted max cooling potential and it seems some of the HWLabs rads with some high flow deltas or panaflows give that, but they are loud.

Swiftech, Thermchill, and XSPC rads are all great. The new HW Labs SR1s are suppose to do well with low-med flow fans, but they are a bit pricey.

If are externally mounting PSU, you should be able to get a 480 and 360 down there and might still have some room for pumps. I can't be positive on that though. You probably won't need that much cooling potential with what you have listed so far though.

I have to keep noise down so high rpm s are out so am narrowing down to thermachill pa series still don t know about fans though and wether to fit them on both sides of rads. Will definately be using 2 x 360 1x 240 doubles also stupid of me not to mention am running two 4870x2 so heat is an issue.

For fans the Gentle Typhoons are king atm. If you don't want to spend the money, Yates are still solid fans are carry a nice price tag.

so you reckon typhoons are better than noctuas

Yep, trust us on that. Get one try, and I would be amazed if you didn't change out all your fans for them.

It seems most everyone that gets their hands on one really likes them. I currently have 5 in one machine and 2 in the other.

Just checked out the typhoons seems like a good choice according to reviews ive seen, would you mount these on both sides of rads?

If you can, it does help. Shrouds also help of you have room for them. IF you don't have the room, just mounted on one side works.

gentle typhoooooooooooons all the way imo, get 1850 or 1450 with a fan controller and your onto a winner! they have good static pressure, move alot of air and are silent!

as for mounting them on both sides of the rad....depends on how much room you have, and how much cash! if you can go for shrouds and fans on both sides....

kinghong1970

now that we've settled on GT's for him...

if he connects them to just a fan header, they will run at full RPM, no?
OP, you should think about getting some fan controllers for more silence... so you can run the fans in lower settings.

Dare i ask whats a good fan controller and how many fans can it run also if these fans are that silent is it needed.

I don't use a fan controller. All mine are running at full speed and are the 1850 rpms. I would just get your setup done, and then decide if they are too loud for you.

Ive not actually got any gentle typhoons in my hands at the moment.... i orderd them but they never arrived, it turns out the shop had no stock :(:(:( from what i hear they run at full speed very quiet.....

but if you do want a fan controler, the best one ive used it this:
http://www.chilledpc.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=523

the sunbeam! currently i have:

Channel 1: Six, 120mm xigmatech fans
Channel 2: three 120mm Xigmatech fans
Channel 3: two 80mm Blue LED fans
channel 4: two 120mm xigmatech fans

it can handle so many fans in just one channel, its brilliant

Edit: in response to kinghong1970's question, yes, if you plug them into the 12v header from the PSU, afaik the fans will run at full speed, all the ones i have run at full when plugged in.... not sure if it changes from fan to fan but yea.....i should think they will run at full speed!

Thanks exemay i am now interested in one of these controllers from the point of view that you can experiment a lot with this set up, and i am using 17 fans so if there is a noise issue i have the choice of lowering fan speeds.

The 1850rpm variant only uses 1w per fan. So just about any controller is good to go. I will be using the 1450rpm GT's myself and I will also have them on a controller so I can slow them down.

I just got my shipment of 6x 1850RPM GT's from jabtech. My pc is currently apart, but I hooked up 1 to the 12V molex, and it can't hear it at all from a couple feet away.

I think I'm gonna be pretty happy with 1850rpm GT's, I probably won't even need to turn them down with a fan controller :D

brinox
08-12-2009, 07:49 PM
im still hellbent on replacing all my computers' fans with arctic cooling AF12025PWM fans. some of you may have seen the brinox mantra about these before, but seriously... they dont hum, they are thermally controlled by the BIOS, as opposed to a fan controller or no control at all. the best part is they run so much more stable at lower RPM. you dont really have to worry about going too far in undervolting them! my case currently has 8 of them: three attached to a PA120.3, two exhausting air behind an MCR220, and 3 simple case fans at the top of my case.

two of these are powered and controlled by my HD 4890's fan header, and the other six are controlled by the CPU PWM header, and set to silent (asus maximus II formula).

for silence and a minimum amount of air movement, i havent found anything quieter... i even have those noctua P12 fans in my server and these run quieter than those

Could not make fan choice between noctua and typhoon so ordered one of each to test.Without using test equipment I could not hear any audio difference between the two.
So which one !.The choice had to come down to the type of build I am doing and the problem is that I have 18 fans and that 5 of them require a major system strip down to replace.Gentle typhoons have a 1 year Warranty wereas Noctuas have 6 years so based on this I have had to choose Noctua.

That works, the audio files that Martian did can be a little missleading anyways. The mic is right on top of the fan, so that is the absolute loudest all those fans will be.

If you do find you like those GTs and they don't match your build, they seem to be easy to paint. SD did a thread on how to break them down and paint them. Good Luck

The GT's are made by Nidec Servo, rated 100,000hrs, and have incredibly well balanced ball bearings, I'd put money down that they last 10yrs+

hey 10 years + thats a huge statement

Nidec Servo is comparable quality to Comair Rotron, and I have had a Comair Rotron 120mm ball bearing fan that I personally installed at work, running 24hrs a day for the last 10 years, in horizontal mount. It has never been turned off besides during a power outage.

It now has almost 90,000hrs of use after being run 24/7 for ten years. The Gentle Typhoons are rated to 100,000hrs.

So for me at least, the statement isn't that huge. :)

No problem, Nidec Servo isn't a very well known name in the computer hobby, but they are very well known in industrial circles.

Some companies specs can be false or semi-false, but if a company like Nidec Servo or Comair Rotron says 100,000hrs I pretty much believe it to be true. :)

FYI, if you can't get the 1850's don't worry, the 1450's are almost as much cfm, and much quieter. (50cfm vs. 58cfm)

Things are progressing slowly and have some problems to sort out, filled the loop yesterday pump seems to be fine am getting cyclone effect which i have to sort as its pulling small amount of air from top of res. Also D-tek northbridge will not accept compression fittings to match rest of build they keep leaking have had to stick to standard barbs for now.More importantly where i have modified bottom of res the screws will not allow the dvd drive to slot in, have tried drilling hole in top of drive but its still too tight think i will have to use a lap top drive any ideas.

did nt want to use these connections may have to change nb waterblock.

not enough room to fit dvd drive between res and rad 4mm more required.
