How can you tell the difference between the 65nm and 55nm versions of this card?

Probably through the chip id you see when running GPU-Z.

u cant do that, they have the same ID

u have to remove the heat sink and compare the size of the die

Only real way to tell is to remove the heatsink and take a look at the core.

65nm is A2.
55nm is B1.

Is one of them a better overclocker, or does the 55nm just run cooler?

the 55nm is 5-10W less power consumption

I RMAd my 8800GT the other day and just got this 9800GT yesterday. I might just take the heatsink off. :)
