Ok, here's my delimma.

I have an evga gtx285 1gb vanilla. My cpu is clocked to 4250mhz and I have 4gb ddr2 at 946mhz.

I can run 3dm06 at 725core - 1651shader - 1475memory and I get 21,402 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=11645938)

If I up it to 760core - 1731shader - 1485memory I get 20,623 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=11649639)

What's the deal?

To put it simply, either the core, shader or mem cant handle the higher clocks and its causing slowdowns which lowers your score.

You have gone too far and something in your hardware has automatically throttled itself as a safety mesure. Probably coming from overheating detection of some parts.

If its doing it specificatly after overcloacking the video card, I'd say its safe to guess you went too far with that part.

I would try and check the temps of your graphic chips with rivatuner.

Also, if you are running on the latests Nvidia drivers, they are rapidly forging a «bad» reputation for putting more stress then ever before on the hardware. Specifically, I'm hearing anormally large amounts of factory overclocked card are getting BSoD with these drivers. People have been reporting that lowering their factory overclocks to the Nvidia specified ones have been resolving their instability.

Now if you have gotten to the point that the card is throttling itself, I would advise that you cease the overclocking immediatly as to not permanently damage the card.

I tried vantage today and got better results. Also, I lowered my mem clocks to 1400 from 1475. Maybe that was it.

Also, the card temp never makes it above 53c with the koolance fc block on it.

Looking through the log in precision the core clock never dips below the rated spec, except during the cpu tests.

shader clock too high can only be twice the core speeds core gets over loaded other wise

1731 mhz you'd need 865mhz core.

760mhz core you can use 1520mhz for shader clock.

In precision, I left them linked from stock speed (increasing them together) and ended up with a stable, 765-1742-1400. I Scored a p17223 in vantage. Maybe I can raise the core and drop the shader for more speed.

I have the same problem with my gtx 295, but it happens in 3d mark 05 3d mark 01 and 3d mark 06. I have noticed increasing my core clock on 3d mark 06 my 3d mark score falls about 300 to 400 points and this is with a 25 mhz bump in core clock. From say 680 to 705 core clock, with shaders linked and memory at 1243Mhz.

Glad to see I am not the only one dealing with this.

Solution.... Use vantage.

Well max stable clocks will differ depending on the benchmark/game. If the card cant handle certain clocks on a specific bench, its not the bench at fault, its the card, so using a different benchmark that does not show up the instability is not solving the problem, it's just avoiding it.

Good to see you making progress though, and yes, its a situation that affects practically every card when pushed to the limit of stability on a given voltage.

Closing 3D06 and reopening or just rebooting between runs helps a little.
