This month Intel will introduce the new revision of this motherboard, featuring a new revision of the X58-chipset. The B2 stepping (S-Spec SLGBT) will be replaced by the new B3 stepping (SLGMX).

Changelog:
* Boot-dependent QPI CRC errors
* QPI L0s and L1 Power Management Link State Fails
* EOI to the I/OxAPIC can be blocked
* GTIME upper 32 bits can not be read or written
* PCI Express 2.0 L0s Link Recovery Fails
* IOH May Falsely Assert THERMTRIP_N Signal After a Reset Event
* MIERRCNT does not properly count persistent SMBus retry failures and MINNERRST doesn't log the errors (HEDT only)
* VT-d reports an Invalidation Queue Error when the Queue size is 7 (HEDT only)

The new board will come with a new bios, P4196, a new high temp nylon PCIe connector and a different SLI bridge (E75252-001).

Correct me if I am wrong, but the first version of the DX58SO was a notable underperformer in gaming benchmarks compared to offerings by Asus and Gigabyte etc.

Did they ever fix that up with a Bios update?

I wonder how this new revision will be for gaming?

Looks like the old BTX standard...!

This will get very interesting using the new Raven style 90 degree cases. I'm sold!~

I'll be waiting a tad longer, but an EVGA based on that reference design, airflow won't be a problem.

That's exactly the same as the current one.
The new parts must be halogen free or something.

its the same board, just with new chipset rev... and everybody is using the B3 rev for the newer boards, they just dont think its worth to make a press release for that :P

and this has actually been posted before, i think last week or 2 weeks ago :)

This is probably one of the worst X58 boards you can actually buy. Doesnt perform on par with different X58 boards, must be those cheap capacitors?

Its Intels board, they can be thought of like Nvidia's reference design cards, made with the cheapest garbage parts money can buy.

Their more or less just workstation boards meant to run parts at stock speeds, but they usually are relativity bug/problem free unlike many other bleeding edge boards (why their good in workstations)

and not meaning to thread jack Intel tend to update the ICH10R RAID and SATA Rom's regularly unlike 3rd party boards which either never update or only update if a problem is reported to them which can be only resolved by an update.
I do like Intel for Workstation boards (happy chappy with a DX38BT workstation system), however they are not the best for gaming and overclocking.
Would be interesting to see if this new revision makes ground in that area...if so it would be a board I might consider for the Core i9 build next year

I wonder if they ever think about making an all-solid capacitor board?

I like it, its almost bugfree. I have been using one since launch in my desktop/gaming rig paired with a 920 C0 clocked @4G.

The only good thing in the "new revision" is that they come with a SLi bridge now.

Yeah, I posted this once the PCN released at the end of July. The new revision is supposed to be available after 08/15/2009, but good luck getting anyone to look at the side of the box for the new revision number for you. I havent found an e-tailer that will do such a thing yet.

Is that an actual picture of the new revision board?

Here is the PCN (http://content.intel.pcnalert.com/dm/d.aspx/1296E0F2-5ED2-482D-BBAE-65285BA1B8E9/PCN109498-00.pdf):

Description of Change to the Customer:
Intel has implemented the following changes to this sku:
• Intelฎ X58 chipset stepping change from B2 to B3
• Upgrade BIOS from P3435 to P4196
• Replace U1UB E50606-001 with E50606-002
• Replace PCIe high temp nylon connector C35285-022 with C35285-029
• Replace EI DVD E42723-002 with E42723-004
• Replace SLI Adapter E65558-001 with E75252-001
• Add E73225-001 as alternate to D73716-001
• Replace XJ1PR D92428-002 with D92428-003

The DX58SO is Intel's gamer board. One thing I found interesting is that the workstation version of the DX58SO called the WX58BP recently had a PCN (http://content.intel.pcnalert.com/dm/d.aspx/457C8622-BA61-44C7-812C-30B2DAC5FC5B/PCN109472-00.pdf) that went out talking about a CPU socket change. I wonder if the DX58SO needs this modification as well (and if so...when will we see it?):

Description of Change to the Customer:
Intel is changing the pressure plate used on the processor sockets to a
different version. This will accommodate future socket designs. There
is no change to the fit, function, or operation of the processor socket.
Changes made to the new pressure plate are:
#1 - Shorten stop feature by 2mm.
#2 - Remove "180 degree bend from" from frame
#3 - Cut-outs are introduced to replace the slots to accommodate
additional orientation posts of future sockets
#4 - Shorten tab by 0.5mm

It does indeed perform the same as any x58 boards. Just don't have high hopes in overclocking RAM.

I'm wondering why Intel is bothered by some minor details that prompts them to update.

People buy intel boards, especially on a forum like this? WHY?

well logic would dictate that intel coming up with core i7 and x58 to begin with know most about their own chips and should be able to create a board that blows the competition out of the water... oddly enough, their boards are sometimes some of the worst around... i dont like this one tbh... the nb cooling is chunky and ugly, the board layout is ugly and stupid too, the bios is really unhandy and buggy, no oc recovery so you have to reset bios all the time, and they dont even have a reset bios button...

but yeah, it does clock around the same as other x58 boards... more or less...
