i have been wanting to learn this for ever but just never get around to it but now i want to learn.

how can i do B&W photos with selective color.

such as take a picture of a face, then convert to b&W but keep the eye color normal.

or B&W outdoor shot while keeping, say the water its normal color, or the grass its normal color,,

there is an app out for the iphone/ipod touch that let's you do this, so this reminded me to ask about how to do this with PS.

ok so i got the duplicate layer, then change it to B&W, but when i pick the eraser tool it erases the B&W layer but the colors that come thru are completely wrong.
not sure what i am doing wrong...

tried a couple of different things and when i erase the B&W layer the colors that show are always, wrong.
its like an eraser w/ a color hue to it.
what comes thru isnt even close to what th eoriginal layer is.
reds are pink, blues are bark blue, and everything else its more or less pinkish

Have you tried selecting what you want to remain colored (maybe using one of the lasso tools) and copy it to new layer and make sure the new layer is on top of the b&w layer?

Sorry if this doesn't help... I'm not pro by any means. :)

Easier way:

Hit Ctrl + Shift + U (Makes the Image B&W)

Use the history brush tool to recolor only what you want. :)

Dont forget the sponge tool. You can get great results with it.

is there a black and white tool or a way to create one?
purpose being to only have certain objects b&w so you dont have to erase the entire picture to make it color

just another suggestion, if you have just one color blue/red/green/yellow you want to show, just desaturate 100% all of the color channels except that one. very quick, very easy

i haven't done this so i do not know but doesnt just show any color with yellow in it which could be a millions spots on the picture not just say, the flower pedals
or simply make the entire picture yellow?

nonono, you dont turn things yellow (if you isolated yellow) you have channels control of red blue green and CMYK in the hue and saturation menu - you desaturate all other colors except for yellow which turns all other colors grey except for yellow and anything yellow still has color - I will do example shots when I am at home, I have no photoshop here at work

What guide are you speaking of? Are we talking about a formal guide or just what was said above with color selection and saturation manipulation? Thanks.
