View Full Version : Mounting the Thermochill PA 120.3, will the radbox cope?

I have just purchased a Thermochill Pa 120.3 and currently have a swiftech MCR320 mounted apon a radbox which feels rather flimsy and cheap it is revision 2 which is i understand is the reason for this. why they changed from metal to plastic is beyond me but still.:shrug:

First this is my Rig at the moment (I know it is awefully messy and fail atm)

What i want is some help or advice if the radbox will cope?
Or what other easy alternatives there are out there for mounting it on the back of the case.
Like 4 long sets of screws and some washers?
Since i have not received the radiator as it is in the post and there are many owners of this radiator on here i wanted to ask.
Is the thread on the fan different to that of most normal radiators like my swiftech?
And what screws and materials would i need to construct my own easy radbox.
I also have 2xscythe slipstreams and 1 thermaltake fan on the radiator at this time. I heard the slipstreams are just about the crappest fans i could of got for a radiator so what are some great low cost alternatives that are still quite?
Finnally i saw on website that the thread on the radiator was different to normal so i may need special barbs which is a shame since i just purchased :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::b anana::banana::banana: fittings at a crazy cost.

Thanks for all the help in advance and this is my first thread.

one of the cheapest alternative would be to get yourself the following:

4x 3" machine screws
12x locking nuts

and use the 120mm fan mount hole in the back of case to create a standoff... it's very rigid this way.

you can always use some washers at the fan mount holes if you feel it's a bit weak there...

Alright that is awesome looks like the perfect solution.
Should i bring something along to make sure i get the right thread size?
Or will it just be called machine nut.

i dont recall what size thread the TC rads use... but at worst case, you may need to thread the holes... if you thread it 6/32, then get the 6/32 nuts and machine screws...

BE CAREFUL not to puncture the rad...

I was looking around and it said i could use M4 screws 30mm and others said 35mm so this is very confusing:S
Also i urgently need a answer on the barbs for the rad.
Can normal bit power 3/8ID 5/8OD compressions fit on them>

ok, as for your barbs, TC comes with G3/8 and the b!tspower fittings are G1/4
so you need to buy an adapter...

Koolance Threading Adapter G3/8Male to G1/4 Female (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=25730)

or

B I T S P O W E R Premium G3/8" High Flow G1/4" Adapter (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=24276)

or

G3/8" to G1/4" Adapter from PTS (http://www.petrastechshop.com/g3tog1ad.html)

as for the standoff... i checked TC's website... and it says that it comes with self threading screws to mount fans to the rad...
i think you're better off getting some 6/32 screws and matching nuts and also pick up a threader for 6/32...

take the rad to your local Home Depot or hardware store, test out which screw size fits... and find matching nuts and stuff...

damn, this censor thing is quite juvenile imo...

Grr why the hell would they do that!!! just be different to the rest.

Buying two of these should match the :banana: compressions damn nicely but there not cheap for a tiny piece of metal.

meh... i guess they all had a good reason when they decided upon it...

why go for the expensive ones, the Koolance ones are dirt cheap...
you're in the states, right?

you should be able to find machine screws in Home Depot easily...
you can actually use those lil vent holes they have in the poly pack to pull out a screw and test it... lol!

don't tell em i told you to do so...

Haha the reason why i am going for the expensive ones is i am not from the states but Australia and i was already doing a order for a gpu block from there.

Just a word of caution on the adapters.

Koolance will only accept Koolance fittings.

B P will accept Koolance and B P fittings.

Petra's will accept all fittings, including Enzotech, Danger Den, Swiftech. . .you name it.

The reason for this is the internal thread lengths, Koolance use the shortest thread length known in water cooling, B P's thread is not that much longer than Koolance's. The ones Petra sell are threaded all the way through because they are not made by any WC'ing only company but rather by a company that makes fittings to internationally recognized specs.

I guess it does but luckily i have :banana: fittings and it seems this is my only option without incurring massive extra postage costs to get them from petra's.
Thanks for the help
