View Full Version : Memory recommendation - 1333 C7 or 1600 C9?

Currently I have this memory in my PC
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231200

I just bought some hardware for someone, who isn't overclocking. I was going to get them basic 4GB DDR3 kit but this was in a killer combo deal
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145200

The other guy doesn't care either way, as with the combo deal it was cheaper to get this than the basic stuff he was going to get originally.

So the question is, for me overclocking a PhII 955, which would be better, the slower memory with the tighter timings/lower volts, or the quicker memory with looser timings and higher volts? Or, is the Corsair able to hit tighter timings than what it is rated at?

Opinions?

I've read somewhere that the northbridge is saturated with 1333Mhz, can't recall where I've read it though. I mostly recommend people to buy a 1600 kit and downgrade it to 1333 with tighter timings.
I don't have any experience with it though, maybe someone with more experience will answer. I'm quite interested as well.

For a 24/7 clock i'd definatly go for lower clocks and tighter timings. My RAM is rated at 1333mhz CL6 @ 1.8v and that is enough...

I think a good thumbrule would be to try have your NB clock twice as high as your RAM?

I use this corsair kit 24/7 - @1.8v it's capable of 1600@cl7 or 1333@cl6

1333 C7 will always beat 1600 C9 but I would try to find 1600 C8 and tighten timings.

So between what I have and this Corsair kit that just arrived I'd be better off with what I've got?

The Gskill stuff you've got might contain Elpida chips. Taking off the spreader will reveal this little secret. If it turns out to be Elpida it might surprise you by what it can do.

1800 cas 6 would be the holy grail. :)

try the corsair kit in the board and see if it can do better than the gskill. btw what revision are you sticks?

Well I couldn't get them to clock worth anything but I'm absolutely horrible at memory clocking. Can't seem to wrap my head around it  I'm struggling with my 955 as it is, too many different things to keep straight. I'm ashamed to say it but I'm at stock speeds on it right now because I couldn't get it stable :(

Uh, your serious? :slap: :D

Just start with everything at auto and go from there, raising multiplier by one step at a time, followed by stability testing.

Once you found the cpu's max at a reasonable voltage, you back down one notch and do the same for CPU-NB.

Once you got both stable your ready to find the mem's max, this might involve raising fsb but since you already know what the cpu and nb can do this shouldn't be a problem.

Very time consuming but the best way.

I can't emphisize enough that you should leave everything other than voltages and primairy mem timings at auto, once you get the feel for it you can tweak all other settings one by one.

Good luck pushing. ;)

i have been read some article from Tomshardware Xbitlab or some sort of website

DDR3-1333 with low CL can provide same bandwidth compared to DDR3-1600 1800 2000 with high CL

it dosnt matter what they are ratted what matters is the rev on the corsair. if its something micron or samsung then u want that

here is the rev list from the houseofhelp, so if its a 3.x or 4.x then u want that
.........................XMSXX0Xv 1.X Qimonda......64/128Mx8
.........................XMSXX0Xv 2.X Elpida .........64/128Mx8
.........................XMSXX0Xv 3.X Micron ........128Mx8
.........................XMSXX0Xv 4.X Samsung......128Mx8
.........................XMSXX0Xv 5.X Hynix...........128Mx8
.........................XMSXX0Xv 6.X Promos .......128Mx8
.........................XMSXX0Xv 7.X (PSC) .........128Mx8
.........................XMSXX0Xv 8.X Nanya.........128Mx8

That is very good advice. First of all, 1333mhz with tighter timings is a lot better than 1600mhz with really loose timings. It also seems like 2600 is the sweet spot for NB performance, so saying the NB should be double the ram sounds about right.

Also that Corsair kit is incredibly overpriced. Even with a combo deal I would stay away from Corsair. This kit (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227447) is much better. I can do 1333mhz @ 6-6-5-20-1T at stock volts of 1.65v. Haven't really tweaked more.

Well it isn't should I buy that ram, it is I got the ram in the big combo deal. So, I have a choice of either the G.skill or the Corsair.

I'm going to check the revision of it when I get home.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly is the combo deal? Also, how well do your G.Skills clock? The "upgrade" might not even be worth it.

AMD 945 + that Corsair kit + Asus M4A78T-E + Samsung F1 1TB hard drive for $385. It was $125 off the normal price.

Friend is getting the 945 and the board and whichever kit I don't use (he doesn't care). I got the hard drive and paid him some of the difference, so he got a good deal on the CPU and board and ram, I got a good deal on the hard drive, we all happy :D

I haven't clocked my G.Skills as I haven't gotten anywhere with them. Not sure if I just couldn't get them to clock or my NB was grumpy or what but I was having BSODs left and right
