I'm leaving tomorrow to Europe because I'm going backpacking. First thing I'm going to do is buy a cell phone. my budget is 600US.

Ive been thinking about the HTC touch pro 2 and the N97. Anyone think of something better? idlike a good camera for taking pics while i'm there and gps to help me get around.

cheers

HTC Touch Pro 2 is really nice "clever" phone...what about Sony Ercisson C905? 8mpx camera, wifi, fm radio, gps, etc...my cousin has this phone and he is really satisfied

How long are you staying in Europe? Do you plan on buying a SIM-lock free phone in Canada to then get a cheap contract or PAY plan over here? Or how did you plan to do it?
EDIT: Try reading this review (http://www.trustedreviews.com/mobile-phones/review/2009/07/03/Nokia-N97/p1) if you need to know more about the Nokia N97, the review actually contains links to the HTC Touch Pro 2 as well.

Some phones to check out:

Nokia N97 (good all around phone, some say the software is a bit laggy. No Xenon flash, only LED, but not really an issue unless you take alot of night pics. CPU is good, but not the latest so it may be a bit slower than the best phones coming out.)
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n97-2615.php

Samsung Omnia HD (multimedia powerhouse, awesome state of the art AMOLED capacitive touch screen, good camera but only LED flash not Xenon, will play about any type of video or online multimedia)
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i8910_omnia_hd-2691.php

Samsung M8910 Pixon12 (the first 12 mega pixel camera in production, Xenon and LED flash. Awesome AMOLED screen)
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_m8910_pixon12-2813.php

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 (excellent all around phone, very high resolution touch screen, good but not great camera. slide out keyboard)
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_x1-2246.php

Sony Ericsson C905 (Not as good with online multimedia as the above phones but still ok. Really good camera with Xenon flash)
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_c905-2427.php

LG Renoir (very good all around phone, excellent camera)
http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_kc910i_renoir-2715.php

HTC Touch Pro 2 (Really about the same hardware and OS as the Xperia X1 since HTC custom made that one for Sony Ericsson, great screen but only ok camera)

HTC Hero.

Hell yeah, rosie kicks butt.

[Don't bother with the TouchHD or any winmo phone. Android is oh so much better.]

HTC Touch Pro2 All the way. Beautiful Phone.

It's ok, but doesn't impress me much. Very mediocre camera, only 3 megapixel, no flash at all. Only 15 fps video camera. Also requires paid software download to watch DIVX/XVID files.

Really only worth considering if you rarely take pics with your phone and aren't a heavy mutimedia user. Screen is nice though.

I don't think he is buying a 600.00 phone for 2 weeks, kinda of short backpacking trip, I admit he has probaly already left though

600USD is around 450€. I don't think he can buy even one of those cellphones with that money. Not without a subscribe plan, at least.
