PROJECT STORM SNIPER

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper00.jpg

A while ago i decided to ditch my Antec1200 which wasn't pleasing me the way i thought it would and so this new project was born. This time i thought i'd put my knowledge and skills to good use and do it properly with decent sleeving, outstanding cable routing and a nice watercooling system. I looked a bit for "the" case that would definitely please me and i came up with this one. I know what you're thinking, but each person has his/her own taste and i'm really tired of TJ07's/Lian-Li, so i picked up a case "nobody has yet".

As most of you are aware, this case was originally painted black, but CoolerMaster somehow decided to ship the final version with the interiors lacking coating. That's where i started my work, trying to make an average case something special. As this thread progresses you'll see why i chose it, it's perfect for what i need, everything has its place in here.

This is the original case:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/original.jpg

And this is the first paint work, waiting on it to dry so i can do the second pass:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper01.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper03.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper04.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper05.jpg

It's not even nearly done and it already looks so much better. There should be a law that forbids cases NOT being fully painted when they leave the factory :ROTF:

I am also getting rid of the harddrive cage and the hideous plastic things in the DVD bays. Those don't really work well and are bound to cause vibration noises later on. Besides that, i hate them

The power supply also saw some modifications (I'm sorry PCP&C, but it's much better this way ):

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper07.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper06.jpg

Meanwhile the paint has dried, applied second pass, dried again and it's time to put the motherboard in the tray so i can study the water loop properly. I know the GTZ has the wrong orientation, it's been fixed already

Still considering whether i use these NOCTUA fans or something else...

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper08.jpg

Also working on this guy, i have a nice idea for it, let's see if it makes it into the project (probably will):

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper09.jpg

To end this first post, here are the pump stands i came up with (courtesy of Cisco, Inc.). These are already cut and painted, the photos will follow in the next update.

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper10.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper11.jpg

Hope you're enjoying, there's MUCH more to follow. The sleeving kit from MurderMod should arrive tomorrow (thanks again Nils), so i'm facing a lot of work in the coming days

Updates soon.

Thank you for your confidence in me, it sure inspires me to keep going, hope i'm up to the hard task of producing a good XS build log ;)

So, here's another small update, nothing really special. The sleeving package has arrived and so i know the next weekend will be a busy one.

Nils always makes a nice drawing, couldn't help smiling when i saw this. Great package, lives way higher than my expectations:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper12.jpg

Inside, loads of work await me. You've all seen them before, but i need to practice on the digital camera :ROTF:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper13.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper14.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper15.jpg

I also put together a few of these LED + resistor combos:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper16.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper17.jpg

To use them here:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper18.jpg

After the board is in place, there's this aura effect and not too much bling (which i don't really like). I will post a few other pictures once the board is in place, i think it looks good.

To close up this small update, some shots of the finished pump holder:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper20.jpg

Nothing more for now, there will be some more stuff during the weekend, or so i hope

Nice really good!

Did u drill a small hole for the LEDs on the mobo tray?

Yep. Small one, then larger then even larger so that the holes are even. Motherboard is already in place, drilled holes for the pump as well and working on sleeving now so that i can connect everything soon enough. Then it's the water setup.

Thanks for looking, i will have some more details and photos soon

Sorry for the double post, wanted to show you how the pump holder turned out.

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper23.jpg

Sleeving done here as well.

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper24.jpg

The GTZ properly assembled now, wonder if it makes any difference. I will never know because my C0 was exchanged for a D0. Different CPU, different thermal grease, too many variables

Both alphacool parts. One is the acrylic adapter for 1/4" fittings and the other is the reservoir that attaches on top. There's also an EK multioption (not shown yet), i am considering whether i should use it or not as it helps take the air out of the loop.

Moving in slowly with the sleeving as there's little else to do while some parts which i ordered make it to my home. These include a radiator and an adapter to hold the HDDs inside the 5 1/4" cages.

SATA cables as well as USB/Power/HDD LED are already sleeved, just finishing the main 24-pin power cable.

Here's how the SATA cables turned out:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper26.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper27.jpg

Some of the PCI-E auxiliary power cables being sleeved:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper28.jpg

As all LEDs in the case are blue (except some on the motherboard, but i'm not gonna mess with those ), i felt compelled to modify the card reader's original green LED with a blue one as well:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper29.jpg

This is what remains to be done, most will be finished this weekend:

- Finish PSU sleeving
- Finish sleeving a few other cables
- Find a place for the EK multioption 150 reservoir (might not make it, but i am still working on its stand)
- Mount the radiators (one missing, ordered)
- Mount the harddisks in their locations (missing the 5 1/4" adapter, ordered)
- Mount the SSD in the back of the case (it looks awesome, but it might end up hidden )
- Mount the dedicated digital thermometer (still have to build the frame for it)
- Connect all cables, mount all tubing, fill the circuit and test

More news soon

Great idea on your motherboard backlit effect! Can't wait to see pics!

Thank you, but it didn't come out the way i wanted, proper lighting can only be seen in perfect dark. My photographic skills aren't that great either, i'm struggling to get a perfect photo so i can show the effect as it is, guess i'll keep trying :p:

nice sleeving job

Thanks millertime, it's *finally* done

Now for some progress on the pump side...

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper30.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper31.jpg

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper32.jpg

Still studying where the SSD(s) will be placed (considering a second X25-M), i wanted them to appear in the build but i wonder if it'll get too crowded there. I mean, i took all the PSU cables out of the way, i don't want to put a lot of stuff there now.

I'm also having a hard time figuring out where to put the EK multioption 150 as it would help me get rid of the air in the loop - The Alphacool reservoir is a tiny one so it's hard like that. I was thinking about placing the EK reservoir in the bottom part of the DVD cage like this:

http://www.tech-caffe.com/gfx/sniper/sniper18a.jpg

But like i said, still being studied. The rest of the parts should arrive today (excluding some new fans by the end of the week but that's not important) and it should help me decide.

Thanks for looking

The last part for the project has also arrived, the thermometer frame. There's only one thing missing now which is the acrylic window, still researching who can do that for me with a professional finish. This will have to wait until i return from vacation in one week.

Here's the thermometer frame, designed by me and professionally executed by a known guy here:

The side panel is *finally* going for the final mod (tinted acrylic window) next monday, so in about a week or maybe less i'll have some photos to show of the final product. Meanwhile i ditched the two GTX280's and got for an extra €20 plus the money from selling the 280's a GTX295 Co-op. The overclocked card performs about the same as the two 280's even though it's only 448-bit and 896MB per GPU but heats way less and doesn't draw as much power.

This is how it turned out, i'm using the second PCI-E slot for even better cooling:

Well, here she is at long last, the side window has arrived. Unfortunately a darker acrylic wasn't available, so a transparent version was used. Here are the final pictures:

Case how it looked when the side panel went for modification:

I installed a black acrylic panel made by the same person who made the side panel window (thanks Patuga @ www.coldzero.pt) so it covers the drive cage side:

Internal thermometer can now be seen clearly, i'm sorry about the pictures quality, it looks WAY better live:

Something else was added, AlphaCool LCD which unfortunately was returned to RMA with two dead vertical lines after 4 days of use:

A little trick to place two HDDs in a 5 1/4" bay:

Would you be able to tell me when there are two HDDs installed in that little contraption, what are the dimensions of space the HDDs are now taking up? I just want to know how tall it is, so I can work out if I can use those nexus mounts for my HDDs. I have limited space so I need to pack the HDDs in as tightly as possible.

Such a great outcome! I'd love to see some shots with the window on, but also showing the fans spinning. This is definitely a showcase setup

Hello, just one. It's hidden on top, just above the acrylic window :p:

Yeah, it's interesting, allows you to monitor what's going on with your CPU and GPU while gaming, i already found some interesting facts about some applications because of it
