i know its still alpha stages but any first impressions, or has anyone heard anything about it?

Yes I have have given it a try its still very buggy. Looks nice though and should be good OS when its finished.

what is longhorn?? is it the newest windows? (microsoft-based os?) i may be interested in upgrading from xp pro

Yes, it's the next microsoft windows release but it will be a long time before it's ready. It's very buggy and eats a ton of ram.
But it's pretty stable so far.
