I don't think you are going to find those video cards on an AMD Laptop platform. Pretty much the only laptop that has the 4870's in crossfire is the Asus W90 Asus W90 Link (http://www.macmall.com/ttsvr/p/5369592)

You can also get a Sager laptop Sager NP9850 link (http://www.sagernotebook.com/product_customed.php?pid=188463) that is customizable and has 2 GTX280's in SLI.

I would recommend the Sager because they make custom laptops for a lot of the high end laptop boutiques. Also you get the laptop for a descent price because you get it direct from them.

According to current benchmarks the GTX 280M's in SLI are faster. Mobile video benchmark comparison (http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html)

+1 for Sager. Their customer service team is among the best for laptops.

And why do you want an AMD laptop? Intel's mobile chips are superior for gaming, which clearly seems to be your intent for this machine.

Their desktop chips are improving, yes. In fact in some cases they can compete directly with i7 and run quite cool. But as far as I know there are no Phenom II-based mobile chips, so 45nm Core 2 mobile chips will be your best option.

i used to carry around a 17" voodoo envy u709... it was an interesting ride...

1)the weight of it took it's toll on me... and perhaps even the system.
2)the heat from a Desktop cpu was overwhelming... so was the graphic cards. it doubled as a spaceheater for me.
3)life expectancy of a laptop can go as far as 10 years, i'm sure... as i still have a very VERY old laptop... but then again, technology advances in hardware and software makes it obsolete in 3-5 yrs max...
4)now i purchased a $1600 dell studio 17... don't do games as well... but then again... it wont break my heart when it gets old or broken...

think about it...

sagers are nice... but they are big... and heavy...
premiums are nice... for now...

Last time I checked at newegg the Asus w90 was out of stock. I guess they have them back in stock and for a good price. Asus W90 - W90Vp-X2 $2199 W90 newegg link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220527&Tpk=asus%20w90)

But they still can't do raid and don't have all the extra options sager does.

Probably not the way you are thinking of modifying the laptop.

Xotic pc offers probably one of the largest selections high end laptops with custom options Xotic PC gaming laptop section link (http://www.xoticpc.com/custom-gaming-laptops-notebooks-gaming-laptops-ct-118_96_98.html). Scroll down to the bottom to see the good ones.

BTW after zanz pointed out the specs on the GTX 280 Mobile (basically a G92b 9800 GTX+). I would go with the 4870 based system. The 4870 Mobile actually uses the same RV770 chip as the desktop 4870.

+1 Asus W90
(get it from xotic pc if you want custom options)

I have a 10lb premium laptop. I have laptop backpack and I don't even notice it.

Try changing it for a 5lb laptop some time, you'll instantly notice the difference. It's like going CRT -> LCD.

To the OP: That monster is going to be heavy, have 0 battery life, and be HOT. As long as you're OK with it, fine... but it's really more a "desktop replacement" than a "notebook". ie. my laptop is surprisingly cool for what it offers (or offered at time of purchase), but I don't put anything to the left of its output vent that can't take some serious heat. To the point where if I leave metal next to it for a bit and try to pick it up, the metal is too hot to hold on to. And I would consider myself lucky compared to that behemoth.

It would be much cheaper and flexible to build/buy small form factor PC instead of a laptop.

What are the high end MSI laptops like?

I was looking at laptops recently for a friend and the only decent high end ones that I could find in stock anywhere in the UK were the MSI ones. The only Asus SLI laptop I could find had 8700GT's in it.

The Asus W90 DOES raid, it's just the newegg one comes with a single... You just order the same drive right from newegg and change it in the bios.. cake! I may actually do that too, the drives are so cheap..

I have seen companies offer Asus W90's with raid 0 so the 2nd hard drive bay does have mounts. Also I know all the Gateway FX series laptops have the 2nd hard drive bay ready to go even in the single drive versions.

I hate to say it but you are wrong on this one zanz.

All the ASUS G50's that ship with only one hard drive does not come with the mounts for the second drive, and must be purchased separately.
