Should I boot up in safe mode to do it or something?

You can defrag in any mode. Safe mode will not load some potentially unmovable files so you might get a more complete defrag in safe mode.

I run Diskeeper 8 every few days, or when I'm not using the computer for anything.

Defragmenting isn't optional with windows, it's crucial to keeping the computer fast and preventing file system errors (in extreme cases).

Get diskeeper if you can find it. search Appz in google for a lets say "lifetime trial" Site with goodies.

Windows defrag is slow, and doesnt seem to do much.

I use diskeeper like 7 or something. I got it from pcworld as shareware, but that was quite a while ago. The only thing that it does not do is schedule the defrag. All the other functions work awesome. If you have kazaa look on there.
