View Full Version : overclocking... I've hit the wall 8k3a+

My 1ghz athlon won't go any higher than 1.5ghz on my 8k3a+ motherboard but was able to hit 1513 on an Iwill KK266+. What gives? everything else is the same... and to boot I was able to overclock higher at 1.85v on the Iwill than I can at 2.20v on the Epox.

Any ideas? I was hoping to get to 1577 or 1666 on the epox with the extra voltage.

I know you don't want to hear this, but that's a sweet a$$ overclock as it is! I've only seen a few 1gigs get that high. You've probably hit the chip's limit.

But why could I get a higher overclock with an old KT133a based motherboard with less voltage? I wonder if a different bios version would help...

very possible. i ran into the same thing with my xp333 vs my old kr7a. i could get better ram scores on the kr7a, but my xp333 worked faster in actual use and could push my cpu for another 70 or so mhz. damned if I know why, but those iwills are just weird.... love em.

a different bios might help. have you been playing with both the FSB and the multiplier to get the best combination? or just pushing the fsb higher? if it is just FSB pushing then you might be hitting the wall of the memory.... doubt it, but a possability.

try taking the cooler apart and mount it again

it might not be making good contact

I just picked up the SLK-800 this afternoon from Bigfootcomputers. Looks like an awesome piece and it does weigh a tonne. I will install it this weekend and see what the temperatures are like on my t-bird... I'm getting middle 50's with an old FOP38 w/cheap fan (which ain't too bad). I'm hoping the better cooler helps o/c up to 1666... time will tell.

p.s. I didn't want to go deaf so I opted for the 80mm Sunon 36cfm (3pin) Cooling Fan.

well one thing could be that the 8k3a+ is alor harder on the chip, by that i mean it has fast CPU command decode, now i know the KK266+ does not have that feature (even though you might not see the option in the bios, it is enabled on all epox bioses) it might be that your cpu cannot handle fast/ultra cpu command decode at that speed, try the 2316 bios as i know that contains options to control the CPU command decode. please post back.

Well I think I've found the upper limit of my old bird... currently it is running quit happily at 1586mhz. :D Clost enough to a P4-B @ 2.4ghz. Got to like 'em t-birds.
