View Full Version : My sister bought a laptop with an engineering sample cpu?!

So my sister bought a new laptop just recently and i really didn't care that much. But her boyfriend took a closer look and realized the cpu was missing super stepping  (apparently it was supposed to have this, i didn't check). So he downloaded that Intel cpu identifier program and it says its an engineering sample.

Anyone had a similar problem? and if so how long did it take to fix? and how hard was it to do? (lol long/hard question) :ROTF:

And what is problem with that?

Because it is against ES policy. ES CPUs are property of Intel/AMD and aren't allowed to be sold.

I want to buy both CPU & ES policy problems.

I'd enjoy having an engineering sample CPU in my laptop, just for novelty.

Blackmail the manufacturer. :D

It'd suck to buy something you can't legally sell later.

Awww too bad,

you see, since it's an ES CPU, it will self-destruct once a certain period of time is past (time which reviewer's have to evaluate the CPU).
Someone probably sold it to your sister right before the expiration date...

Is it a new (like brand new, retail) or a use laptop. What are the specs?

The program probably misidentified the cpu, just like cpu-z use to say my i7 was an ES.

super stepping

what? You mean speedstep (EIST)?
Not every intel cpu has EIST -- e.g. single-core CeleronM-s don't have EIST.
The "ES" can be a sw glitch. Give us specs, so far you have given us a big
pile of nothing. If it is indeed an ES cpu, then you can't "fix" it; but most
ES CPUs have EIST enabled, so it sound strange.

Have you tried using another identifying program like cpu-z? Does it still say its an ES? Any specs?

Probably cpu identifier that screws around.
Coretemp also has a habit of identifying some cpu's as ES while there not.

its doubtful its an ES try cpuz and see what that says if it is indeed a ES chip was the laptop new or used and what model is it

Its prob just software reading it wrong.

I remember my B3 Q6600 read as a ES chip when I first got it in CPUz, bug eventually got fixed in a later build

i think they'll have policy problems...
